The celebration of the life of Mr. Jerome “Big Duck” Smith kicked off in true Treme’ style with a second line in the streets. The community came out in the rain to show respect to a true New Orleans legend.

We extend our sincere gratitude to Freddie King III and the Treme residents for putting together an exceptional tour for our youth in the historic Treme Neighborhood. Participants had the opportunity to visit the BackStreet Cultural Museum, where they gained insights into the tradition of masking Indians and the rich history associated with Treme homes. Additionally, they were treated to a delightful meal from Lil Dizzy’s Cafe. It was indeed a remarkable day, enriched with cultural heritage, historical knowledge, and exquisite flavors.

Vending “under the bridge” is more than just selling food. It is about financial freedom and economic independence. That’s why I, along with Ujamaa EDC, community leaders, and Mayor Moreno’s administration are committed to making vending under the bridge, safe, clean, and equitable for everyone.

Today New Orleans and America lost an icon in Jerome “Big Duck” Smith. Mr. Smith was a true example of bravery, courage, and uncompromising advocacy. He showed that no matter where you are from, or how old you are, you have power and you can make a difference in your community. This city is truly a better city because of him.

There is a lot ot be excited about in Algiers.

Gerald’s Donuts, the newest business in Algiers is now open.

Construction crews are working on installing a red light at the intersection of General DeGaulle and Wall Boulevard.  Over the years this intersection has been the site of dozens of crashes.

The former Rite Aid on General DeGaulle is being demolished to make way for Bank of America, which is the second largest bank in the United States.

Renovations  are halfway complete on the 60 unit, market rate, loft style apartments on Federal City. These apartments will target young families and working singles. This property was vacant for 20 years. It will now be the home to the newest residents in Algiers.

Renovations are happening at the former blighted Oakmont Apartment Complex. This property has been an eyesore in Algiers for years.

All of these improvements add up to make a better and safer Algiers, District C, and New Orleans.
