Lasting public safety in New Orleans is deeply important to all of us at Orleans Public Defenders.

Public defenders play a critical role in that effort. By protecting constitutional rights, connecting people to treatment and supportive services, addressing the underlying issues that bring people into the legal system, and helping reduce unnecessary incarceration, we contribute to stronger, healthier, and safer communities. Real public safety is not achieved by any one institution alone; it is created through collaboration, accountability, and sustained investment in people and neighborhoods.

This Fourth of July, we’re reminded that public defense is patriotic.

The Sixth Amendment promises every person the right to counsel; not just those who can afford it. Public defenders uphold that promise every day, protecting due process, dignity, and the idea that the Constitution belongs to all of us.

We honor public defenders across the country who work to make that promise real.
