🚧 Bridge Update – Plan Ahead
Starting in May, the Skagit River Bridge (SR 536) is getting a long-overdue refresh—and yes, it’s going to affect traffic for a while (think close to a year).
Here’s what that looks like:
• Only westbound traffic will be allowed across the bridge
• Eastbound lanes will be closed to regular vehicles
• Pedestrians & cyclists can still cross both directions
• Emergency vehicles will have limited eastbound access (controlled)
• Expect occasional nighttime + weekend full closures
The project is being handled by Washington State Department of Transportation, and they’ll be sharing updates as things move along.
🌉 A Little Local Backstory
This bridge has been part of the community since 1953—and fun fact—it was built as a swing bridge, meaning it could rotate to let large boats pass through the river. It hasn’t seen a fresh coat of paint in decades, so this upgrade is definitely overdue.

This is one of those projects that’s a short-term headache but a long-term win. Expect changes to your daily route, commute times, and how you move between downtown and west Mount Vernon—but it’s all about keeping this key connection strong for years to come.
