Friendly reminder: A Notary Public and an Attorney are not the same role ⚖️✍🏽

While some Notaries Public may also be licensed Attorneys, I am not an Attorney, and there are important limits to the assistance I can provide in my role as your notary.

I cannot provide legal advice, interpret your document for you, explain what legal language means, tell you what you should or shouldn’t sign, or choose a notarial act for you when that decision hasn’t already been made.

What can I do? 👇🏽
I can verify identity, administer an oath or affirmation when required, perform the appropriate notarial act once it has been identified, complete the notarial certificate, and make sure my part of the process is handled properly.

Questions about the legal meaning or effect of a document should be directed to a licensed Attorney.

One of the biggest misconceptions about notarization is that a notary’s job is simply to stamp and sign a document.

But there’s quite a bit that happens BEFORE that stamp ever touches the page. ✍🏽

🪪 Identity verification: We must establish the signer’s identity as permitted under New Jersey law.

👤 Personal appearance: The signer must personally appear before us, whether in person or through an authorized remote notarization process.

✍🏽 Willingness and awareness: We must be attentive to whether the signer appears willing and aware of what they’re doing.

📋 Proper notarial act: The appropriate act must be identified before proceeding.

📖 Recordkeeping: We must document the notarization in accordance with New Jersey’s notarial recordkeeping requirements.

And that’s just part of the process!

The stamp may be what you see, but the responsibility behind it is what matters.

A notarization isn’t simply about making a document look official. It’s about properly performing the notarial act and helping protect the integrity of the process.

Save This Before Your Next Appointment 📌

Your notary appointment shouldn’t come with surprises 👀

A little preparation BEFORE your appointment can be the difference between a smooth notarization and realizing something is missing once your notary arrives.

Before your appointment, check these 6 things:
🪪 Have acceptable identification. In NJ, this commonly includes government-issued identification that is current or expired no more than 3 years.
📄 Bring the complete & fully prepared document. That means the entire document, not just the signature or notary page, and any information you're responsible for providing should be completed.
✍🏽 Know when to sign. Some notarizations require you to sign in the notary's presence, while others may allow a previously signed document. If you're unsure, it's typically best to wait.
📋 Confirm your notarization type. Acknowledgments, jurats, and copy certifications are common examples, and they serve different purposes.
👥 All required signers / witnesses present. All parties must be present at the time of the appointment.
💳 Confirm payment arrangements, if applicable.

Hello October, Hello Q4 & Happy International Coffee Day! ☕️🍂

Q4 means it’s officially harvest season 🌱
