February is Black History Month, a time to honor the legacies of Black Americans who shaped our nation’s history, culture, and laws. It is a moment for reflection and recognition of those who expanded the promise of justice and equality.

On this first day, we remember Thurgood Marshall, the first Black Justice of the United States Supreme Court. Before his appointment in 1967, Marshall was a brilliant civil rights lawyer and lead counsel in Brown v. Board of Education, the landmark case that ended legally enforced segregation in public schools. As a Justice, he remained a powerful voice for civil liberties and equal protection under the law. His legacy reminds us that meaningful change comes through persistence, courage, and an unwavering commitment to justice.
