How Minnesota's Felony Theft Thresholds Determine Charge Severity

Understanding the legal landscape is crucial, especially when it comes to theft charges in Minnesota. The state's felony theft thresholds play a significant role in determining the severity of charges that individuals may face. These thresholds are set limits that differentiate between misdemeanors and felonies based on the value of the stolen property. As the thresholds can influence sentencing, penalties, and the overall legal process, it’s essential to be informed about how they work.

Can You Be Arrested for Drug Possession If the Drugs Belong to Someone Else in Minnesota?

Understanding drug possession laws is crucial, especially if you find yourself in a situation where you may be holding drugs that aren't yours. In Minnesota, the legal implications can be complex.

If you're caught with someone else's drugs, law enforcement may still charge you with possession. The state laws tend to focus on whether you have control over the substances rather than ownership. This means that even if the drugs belong to another person, you could potentially face serious charges.

For a deeper understanding of your rights and what to do in such situations, check out this comprehensive article: https://www.keyserdefense.com/can-you-be-arrested-for-drug-possession-if-the-drugs-belong-to-someone-else-in-minnesota/

How Entrapment Defenses Work in Minnesota Drug Cases

Curious about entrapment defenses in Minnesota drug cases? Entrapment occurs when law enforcement induces someone to commit a crime they wouldn’t have otherwise. In Minnesota, defendants can argue entrapment by proving police misconduct led them to break the law.

To succeed, defendants must show two things: 1) they were not predisposed to commit the crime before police involvement, and 2) the government's actions were coercive enough to push them into the offense.

New 5.0-star Review: "Chris represented my grandfather on a felony case, and the outcome was exactly what we wanted, a dismissal deal with the condition of keeping a clean record for a year. A few months into that period, my grandfather got into another situation and we needed Chris again. He got us another great result, a continuance for dismissal. What stood out most was how clearly Chris communicated. Any time I didn't understand something about the case, he took the time to walk me through it until it made sense. He was professional throughout, and carried himself exactly how you'd want a lawyer to. We've used him for multiple cases now and gotten the outcome we wanted every single time. Highly recommend."

New 5.0-star Review: "I believe in giving credit where it’s due, and Chris Keyser goes above and beyond. I have unfortunately had to hire Chris multiple times for complex criminal matters, including a recent second-degree, third DUI charge. While my record is not something I am proud of, Chris is fair, objective, and highly effective. This recent case began in October 2023 and did not conclude until February 2026. It became a grueling, multi-year ordeal due to severe health complications on my end, resulting in frequent hospitalizations from a serious chronic autoimmune disease. Because Minnesota enforces strict mandatory minimum sentences for a third offense, the hands of both the judge and prosecutor were essentially tied. Incarceration would have posed a catastrophic risk to my health, and under the statutory requirements of the state, prison time seemed virtually unavoidable. Yet, against all odds, Chris delivered 100%. He never lost faith, shied away from the complexity, or dropped the ball. When I was terrified and losing hope, Chris pivoted the strategy the moment the circumstances aligned in our favor. Ultimately, he achieved a true "holy grail" of resolutions: zero days spent in a jail cell, with the entire sentence served on Electronic Home Monitoring (EHM). Chris honors his financial contracts, gives you the blunt truth, and avoids the cheap courtroom stunts defense attorneys are often known for. His stellar reputation with local judges and prosecutors is built on solid methods and extensive knowledge of the law. He stays with you from beginning to end and doesn't leave you in the dark when lingering issues pop up after a case wraps. Five stars is the bare minimum for Chris. If you are facing criminal charges, do not second-guess—hiring him is an absolute no-brainer."

New 5.0-star Review: "I was very impressed with Christophers timely responses and ability to translate some of the legal jargon I was reading in other court papers to me. From someone who has never had to deal with any legal matters, I am extremely happy I hired him. He was very clear in his explanations to me about options, and what was being asked for. He let me know what was going on and next steps. Great communication. Overall a very good experience. I would highly recommend him to anyone."

New 5.0-star Review: "Chris is the best lawyer I have worked with in Minnesota. After several other attorneys told me that my record could not be expunged, I had lost all hope. From our very first meeting, Chris took the time to understand my situation, explained the process clearly, and gave me confidence that there was a path forward. Six months later, my record was successfully expunged. I am incredibly grateful for Chris's dedication, professionalism, and expertise. I highly recommend Chris to anyone seeking legal representation you will be in excellent hands."
