Our client was accused of false allegations that could have thrown him back to prison for 5 years. To make matters worse, his probation agent made misrepresentations & refused to correct the wrong! For 6 months, he was wrongfully imprisoned. We refused to accept the institutional resistance against us & continued to press for accountability & due process. Ultimately, he was fully exonerated & released—free from all allegations! Deeply grateful to Isiah Holmes, Wisconsin Examiner, for bringing public attention to the profound stakes involved. Too often, individuals who have served their custodial sentences remain vulnerable to systemic failures that jeopardize their freedom & efforts to reintegrate as productive members into their communities.
“While I am gravely concerned about Dennis’ situation, I am even more concerned about how many other people have been revoked and sent to prison because an agent knows they can lie and no one will do anything about it. The people being supervised are human beings; to imprison them for years on false statements knowingly made by an agent is not something that will be overlooked...Those under your care deserve to be treated fairly.”– Atty. May Lee emailing DOC Regional Chief Niel Thoreson in September 2025
Dennis Simmons was nearly sent back to prison because of false statements made against him, and a probation agent who wouldn't listen.
