After a car accident, the bills pile up fast. The insurance company knows it, and that's why their first offer often comes quickly and comes low.

Once you settle, it's usually final. If your injuries turn out to be worse than you thought, you may not be able to recover more.

Before you sign anything, talk to a lawyer about what your claim is actually worth: https://www.millerlawpractice.com/what-are-the-risks-of-settling-a-car-accident-claim-too-quickly/

"Mind if I take a look in your car?" You can say no.

Under the Fourth Amendment, police generally need a warrant, your consent, or probable cause to search your vehicle. Officers may make it sound like you don't have a choice. Saying no, calmly and politely, doesn't make you look guilty. It protects your rights.

If police search anyway and find something, an attorney can challenge the search. Evidence from an unconstitutional search can be excluded from court.

Pulled over and asked to walk a line or stand on one leg? In Georgia, roadside field sobriety tests are voluntary. The officer probably won't make that clear.

These tests are scored on the officer's own opinion, and if one is given wrong, the results can be off. Georgia's implied consent law applies to breath, blood, or urine tests requested after a lawful arrest. Refusing one of those can lead to a license suspension. Field sobriety tests aren't covered by that law.

Police are allowed to lie to you during questioning. You aren't allowed to lie to them. That imbalance is why "I'll just explain my side" so often ends in handcuffs.

An officer says, "Well, if you're drunk, you fooled me!" You laugh, or nod, or say "yup." That can be written up as an admission.

If police want to talk to you about a crime, be polite and give your name or ID. Then say you're invoking your right to remain silent and you want a lawyer. And then stop talking.
