There are seasons when making one more decision can feel like too much.

Estate planning often gets pushed aside for exactly that reason. There are names to choose, questions to answer and situations we'd rather not imagine.

You don't need to figure everything out before you begin.

A good planning process should help organize those decisions and make them easier to work through one at a time.

Sometimes clarity comes from simply getting the questions out of your head and onto the table.

"Do I need a will or a trust?"

It sounds like a simple question. The answer depends on the family.

A will can name who receives property, who handles the estate and who should serve as guardian for minor children. A properly funded living trust can provide additional structure, help certain assets avoid probate and give families more control over how property is managed.

Some families need a will-based plan. Some benefit from a trust. Some use both.

The goal isn't choosing the document that sounds more sophisticated. It's choosing the plan that fits the family.

A good estate plan should answer the "what ifs" before your family ever has to.

Doing something nice for your family doesn't always look like a big gesture.

Sometimes it's making sure they know where the important documents are.

Sometimes it's choosing who can make decisions if you cannot.

Some of the most common estate planning triggers are the ones people forget to think of as triggers.

A move to Georgia from another state. A child getting married. A grandchild being born. A parent moving in for care. A divorce that finalized last year. A business that grew, or one that closed. Who would step in if something happened to you? Who would care for the kids? Does your family know where your important documents are? Have you talked about what you actually want?

Signing a trust is one step. Funding a trust is a second, separate step.

We see families who thought the trust was the whole plan, then discover later that the house, the accounts, or the investment property were never actually moved into it. The intent was there. The follow-through was not.

A trust with the wrong assets outside of it can create the same probate the family thought they had avoided.

Naming someone to handle digital assets is different from naming someone to handle the rest of the estate.

The person who is most comfortable with paperwork may not be the same person who can navigate two-factor authentication, cloud accounts, and password managers. A digital fiduciary role can be its own conversation.

The goal is that when the family needs access, someone who is prepared for that specific job actually has what they need.
