If you’re going through a divorce, here are a few ways to potentially save thousands in attorney’s fees.

💵Get organized early: Gather financial documents (taxes, bank accounts, credit cards, loans) and sort them by category. Don’t pay your attorney to do work you can easily prepare.

💵 Keep a simple journal: Use bullet points for key dates and events. Not emotions or long explanations, just relevant facts and timing.

💵 Stay off social media: Anything posted can come back later and may be used in court.

💵 Be fully honest with your attorney: Even the uncomfortable details. We can only protect what we know.
Divorce can be expensive, but preparation can significantly reduce unnecessary costs.

Would you rather be divorcing someone because they cheated on you physically OR because they committed financial infidelity and lied about money?

As a divorce attorney, I see both situations.

One leaves emotional damage. The other can completely change your financial stability for years to come. If I had to weigh the two, financial infidelity is often the more damaging long-term.

In a divorce, would you rather keep the house equity or the retirement account?

For most people, the retirement account is the stronger financial choice.

Why?
• Houses come with ongoing costs (mortgage, taxes, upkeep)
• Retirement accounts are built to grow
• Real estate can be expensive to maintain
• The house may feel like “home,” but it is not always the best asset

Emotion favors the house. Finances often favor the retirement account, so don’t let emotion make the decision.

Would you rather settle your divorce at mediation OR let a judge decide everything at trial?

If you picked mediation, here’s why that’s often the better option:
✔️ You stay in control of the outcome
✔️ You know your family situation better than anyone else
✔️ It is typically faster and less expensive
✔️ You avoid leaving major decisions to a stranger in a courtroom

At trial, a judge who doesn’t know your family is making permanent decisions about your future and your children.
In most cases, mediation gives you more control, more flexibility, and more stability moving forward.

Summer break can be exciting for kids, but it often requires extra planning for co-parents.

A clear parenting plan helps reduce confusion around schedules, travel, and time-sharing so everyone knows what to expect before summer begins.

Here are some ways to reduce stress:
☑️ Confirm vacation dates early and in writing
☑️Align on summer camp and activity schedules ahead of time
☑️Review travel notice requirements before booking trips
☑️Keep communication consistent and timely

When expectations are set early, parents can spend less time navigating conflict and more time focused on what matters most: their children.

If your current plan doesn’t quite fit your family’s needs, it may be time to revisit it. Book a consult with us today: https://gafamilylawyers.com/book-a-consult/

As a family law attorney, this is something I hear far too often: “If I don’t pay child support, they can’t make me… what are they going to do?”

Here’s what can actually happen if child support is ordered and not paid:
➡️ Wage garnishment
➡️ Bank account garnishment
➡️ Driver’s license suspension
➡️ Passport suspension
➡️ Jail time for contempt until you comply (and pay what’s owed)

Nonpayment doesn’t make the obligation go away. It usually just escalates the consequences. In many cases, the issue isn’t ability to pay, it’s delay in taking it seriously.

If you have questions about child support or enforcement, Brown Dutton & Crider is here to help.

You can say the EXACT same thing three different ways and your co-parent may perceive them very differently.

Compare these:
💬 “So you forgot the soccer cleats again. Cool.”
💬 “The cleats are not in the bag. Please send them.”
💬 “Hey, looks like the cleats aren’t in the bag. Can you make sure to send them to practice?”

Same issue. Same request. Very different tone.

One sounds passive-aggressive. One sounds cold. One sounds neutral and cooperative.

Successful co-parenting is not just about what you communicate. It is also about how your communication is perceived. That applies to texts, emails, and every day interactions.

Gratitude is not about ignoring the hard parts of your divorce. It is about recognizing the growth, strength, and fresh opportunities that can come from change.

A few ways gratitude can positively impact your divorce journey:
💙 It helps you focus on what’s ahead instead of what’s behind
💙 It supports emotional and physical healing
💙 It builds resilience during difficult moments
💙 It can improve co-parenting relationships
💙 It helps create peace and closure as you move forward

Sometimes healing starts with noticing the small good things, even on the hardest days.

If you’re going through a divorce and need guidance, Brown Dutton & Crider is here to help.

A parenting plan is designed to create structure and stability for your children, not control every detail of the other parent’s household.

In most cases, decisions like bedtime routines, meals, and age-appropriate entertainment are left to each parent during their own parenting time.

Understanding the difference can help reduce conflict and keep the focus where it belongs: on the well-being of your children.
