A good day for continuing education — and an even better reminder that some of the biggest risks in healthcare don’t begin with a lawsuit.

Smith Sconzert was pleased to attend the LAMMICO Defense Counsel Seminar at the Hotel Monteleone, where Elizabeth Sconzert joined Christopher Foret, M.D., of St. Tammany Health System to present “When Exhaustion Becomes Exposure: Burnout and Liability in Healthcare.”

We talked about burnout from both sides of the equation: what it does to healthcare professionals and patient safety, and what happens when those effects make their way into a medical malpractice claim.

The conversation went beyond simply identifying burnout as a problem and focused on what healthcare organizations, risk professionals, claims professionals, and defense counsel can actually do about it.

Premises liability catches a lot of business owners off guard and the misconceptions around it can be expensive.

Smith Sconzert was proud to sponsor the Claims Academy at Claims XChange — and we showed up ready to work.

Our own Elizabeth Sconzert served as co-chair of the Professional Liability Committee, leading the development of 12 hours of programming that followed the life of a PL claim from start to finish. No small undertaking, and she delivered.

Attorney Kelly Brian presented on the importance of valuation and revaluation in professional liability claims, and we were also thrilled to have Karlin Fitzmorris join the companion program to share her perspective. Her session, The Client's View, brought exactly the kind of real-world insight that makes this conference worth attending.
