As we celebrate our nation's independence, we reflect on the remarkable role intellectual property has played in America's growth and innovation over the past 200+ years.

On July 31, 1790, George Washington signed the first patent, granted to Samuel Hopkins, for a process of making potash, an ingredient used in fertilizer. Now this year, on June 4, 2024, the 12 millionth utility patent was granted to a team of inventors from Pacific Biosciences of California, Inc. for a “Labeled Nucleotide Analogs, Reaction Mixtures, and Methods and Systems for Sequencing,” a chemical reagent for use in DNA sequencing.

From groundbreaking inventions to iconic trademarks, intellectual property has been the bedrock of progress, driving creativity and economic success.

We greatly enjoyed catching up with our international friends and new associates at the 146th Annual Meeting of the International Trademark Association (INTA) in Atlanta! This is where we meet with many of our foreign intellectual property associates who file patents and trademarks for our clients throughout the world. It was a great experience being able to exhibit in Atlanta, and we plan to do so again next year in San Diego.
