SCOTUS ended a decade of litigation this morning and ruled Google's use of Oracle's API packages was fair use, saying computer programs are different from other copyrightable works "because computer programs always serve a functional purpose" and Google only copied the 11,500 lines of code that was necessary for its "valid and transformative purpose," as opposed to the millions of lines of code of the Sun Java API.
