We are happy to announce that Denisse Gastélum was honored with the CAOC Street Fighter of the Year Award along with the Wesley Alarcio v. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department legal team Arnoldo Casillas, M. Lawrence Lallande and Karina Lallande. The legal team was able prove that Mr. Alarcio’s tragic death was caused by the systemic failure of the Sheriff’s Department in their monitoring of mentally ill inmates at the Los Angeles County Twin Towers Correctional Facility — the world’s largest jail and the nation’s largest mental health facility. The Alarcio matter resulted in the largest jail-death-related settlement against the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Thank you Consumer Attorneys of California for giving civil rights practitioners the platform to expose other attorneys to this righteous work.

May Mr. Alarcio Rest in Peace and in Power knowing that the legal team fought for him and his family. His life mattered.

A civil rights lawsuit, in its fundamental sense, is one of the most powerful tools we have to make systemic change in society and to protect our most vulnerable from constitutional violations. Denisse Gastélum is proud to have been part of the legal team behind the Alarcio v. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s federal civil rights action that resulted in the largest jail-death related settlement against L.A. County Sheriff’s Department.
