This month, CEO Kathryn Eidmann takes us inside two important victories protecting our communities:

⚖️ At the Adelanto ICE Processing Center, the Ninth Circuit declined to pause essential protections ordered by the court, including access to clean water, safe food, proper sanitation, medical care, and independent monitoring.

🏠 In Los Angeles’ homelessness response system, the court blocked the federal government’s attempt to take control of $240 million in federal funding, restoring local control while the case continues.

From detention centers to the streets of Los Angeles, Public Counsel continues to fight for dignity, safety, and a say in the decisions that affect our communities.

Public Counsel and The People’s Law Project: Los Angeles have filed a lawsuit on behalf of 12 current and former tenants of Blue Butterfly Village, a supportive housing community in San Pedro built specifically to house formerly homeless veterans, survivors of domestic violence, and other vulnerable tenants.

Our clients allege that Volunteers of America allowed the property to fall into years of disrepair including mold, sewage backups, rat infestations, and broken appliances while retaliating against tenants who organized to demand fixes.

These are tenants who served their country, overcame homelessness, and were promised a safe place to call home. They deserve accountability.

We are thrilled to welcome Matt Kugizaki to Public Counsel as our new Director of Pro Bono.

Matt brings extensive experience building innovative pro bono programs and partnerships that expand access to justice. Previously, he served as Pro Bono Director at Inland Counties Legal Services, where he expanded partnerships with law firms, corporate legal departments, and community organizations to address a wide range of unmet legal needs.

At Public Counsel, Matt will lead efforts to strengthen and grow our pro bono partnerships and develop new opportunities for collaboration that advance civil rights and racial and economic justice.

Pro bono partnerships are essential to meeting the breadth and scale of legal needs facing communities across Southern California.

💪 Congratulations to our 2026 summer interns!

We gathered to celebrate and send off our incredible summer interns, whose hard work, energy, and commitment made a tremendous impact across Public Counsel.

This summer, 23 law students gained hands-on experience working alongside attorneys on issues that directly impact communities across Los Angeles and beyond. Their experience included opportunities to visit the chambers of judges and justices. They were able to observe proceedings, learn directly from members of the judiciary, and ask questions about their experiences and careers in public service.

We are grateful for the opportunity to celebrate our interns and all they contributed to the Public Counsel community this summer.

A special thank you to Bruce Cormicle and Betsy Beers for their generosity in opening their home and hosting our farewell soirée.
