⚠️ 1099 Contractor or W 2 Employee? Get the Classification Right.

Calling someone a contractor does not make them one. The IRS looks at the actual working relationship to determine how a worker should be classified.

What to know:
🔹 Behavioral control: Who directs how the work is done
🔹 Financial control: Who provides tools, pays expenses, and controls payment
🔹 Working relationship: Contracts, benefits, and permanency
🔹 Misclassification can lead to back taxes, penalties, and interest

With more businesses relying on freelancers and remote workers, worker classification is more important than ever.

Not sure how your workers should be classified? It is better to find out before the IRS does.

🏡 The Federal Estate Tax Exemption Is Now $15 Million. Here Is What That Means for Your Family.

The federal estate tax exemption was expected to decrease significantly in 2026. Instead, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act established a higher exemption amount that is now permanent and adjusted for inflation.

What to know:
🔹 The 2026 federal estate and gift tax exemption is $15 million per person
🔹 Married couples may have a combined exemption of up to $30 million
🔹 The exemption is adjusted for inflation going forward
🔹 Estate planning is still important, regardless of the size of your estate

For many families, federal estate tax may no longer be the biggest concern. But a complete estate plan can still include a will, updated beneficiary designations, powers of attorney, and a plan for how your assets will transfer.

Business owners should also consider succession planning to help protect their business and prepare for the future.

🔹 These payments generally cover income earned from June through August
🔹 Partnerships and S corporations that filed an extension in March generally have an extended filing deadline of September 15
🔹 Missing these deadlines may result in penalties and interest

Do not wait until the last minute. Reviewing your payment amount or completing your extended business return now can help you avoid unnecessary stress and penalties.

👤 Age 50 or Older? The Retirement Catch Up Rules Changed for 2026. Two Things to Know.

If you are age 50 or older, new retirement contribution rules could affect how you plan and save for 2026.

What to know:
🔹 If you are between ages 60 and 63, you may qualify for a higher catch up contribution to certain workplace retirement plans
🔹 The higher contribution amount is available only during this limited age window
🔹 Beginning in 2026, higher earners may be required to make certain catch up contributions as Roth contributions
🔹 This means those contributions are made after tax but may grow and be withdrawn tax free under qualifying rules

If your prior year wages exceeded the applicable income threshold, your retirement contribution strategy may need to change. Check with your plan administrator and tax advisor before year end.

💼 Business Owners: Research and Development Costs Are Fully Deductible Again

A major tax law change gives businesses more flexibility when it comes to domestic research and development expenses. If your business invests in software, product development, process improvements, or technical work, this could be important for your 2026 tax planning.

What to know:
🔹 Domestic research and experimental expenses may now be fully deductible in the year incurred
🔹 The change applies to tax years beginning after December 31, 2024
🔹 Certain small businesses may be able to apply the change to prior years
🔹 Qualifying businesses may be able to recover taxes previously paid through amended returns or other available options

If your business develops software, designs products, improves processes, or performs technical work, you may have qualifying expenses without realizing it. Reviewing your R&D costs could uncover significant tax savings.

⛳ The Tax Rule Named After a Golf Tournament

There is a tax rule named after Augusta, Georgia, home of the Masters. It is called the Augusta Rule, and it can create an interesting tax planning opportunity for homeowners and business owners.

What to know:
🔹 Renting your personal residence for 14 days or fewer during the year may allow the rental income to remain tax free
🔹 The rule can apply when your home is rented for legitimate business meetings, retreats, or events
🔹 A business may be able to deduct the rental expense when the arrangement is legitimate and properly structured
🔹 Fair market rates and thorough documentation are essential

The Augusta Rule can be a valuable strategy when used correctly. But the details matter, and proper documentation is critical.
