Our team laced up early for a local 5K and later gathered in support of the Huntsville Museum of Art at its annual Huntsville Museum of Art Gala — a wonderful celebration of creativity and community impact.

Huntsville thrives because of organizations that educate, inspire, and bring people together. We are honored to support efforts that strengthen our city in every way.

It was a meaningful day — start to finish.

We are proud to share that Amanda Turnage serves on the Board of Free 2 Teach, an incredible Huntsville nonprofit dedicated to equipping public school teachers with the supplies they need to help students thrive.

free2teach supports more than 6,000 educators across Madison and Limestone Counties by operating a “free store” where teachers can access essential classroom materials at no cost. Their mission ensures underserved students have the tools for an excellent education — and we are honored to support that work.

This weekend, several of our attorneys (and one supportive spouse!) laced up their running shoes for a 5K benefiting this outstanding organization. 🏃‍♂️📚

Interview with Rick:

🔹 What inspired you to pursue a career in law?
My dad greatly admired the music industry lawyers he dealt with, and I greatly admired my dad so one thing led to another. And then in college I had one professor who was an extraordinary mentor and saw I had an aptitude for law. His encouragement eliminated any self-doubt I had.

🔹 What area of law are you most passionate about and why?
While not per se an area of the law, I love cross examination. An effective cross examination obviously can win a trial, but cross examination in critical depositions can also lead to success at trial or a favorable resolution for the client.

🔹 What unique skills or experiences do you bring to the firm?
The benefits of longevity. I have handled and tried a wide variety of types of cases.

🔹 Can you share a memorable case or client success story?
It has been a long time ago now and was in a case very different from what I usually handle. It was in my first trial upon returning to the Shoals. We represented a disabled lady who had been taken advantage of by a company. We learned during discovery that the company had also taken advantage of a large number of similarly situated disabled or retired folks. My main task at trial was to cross examine the Senior Vice President, the primary culprit. After about 3 hours on the stand of repeated denials and blaming the victims, he confessed the fraud. The case settled for seven figures before the cross examination was completed.

🔹 Outside of work, what are your interests or hobbies?
I have a cattle farm of about 200 brood cows. I use to love to hunt, but now I am more of a watcher than a hunter. I am also an avid cyclist. I rode over 7500 miles last year.

🔹 Lastly, what's one fun fact about yourself that people might not know?
More surprising than fun given my build, but I have completed 3 Ironman 70.3 triathlons. I also come from a very musical family. My dad was an acclaimed record producer and Grammy winner. One brother Mark co-wrote a classic song, “I Like It, I Love It” by Tim McGraw. My other brother Rodney is a successful music publisher and studio manager. For my part, I have exactly ZERO musical ability.

🔹 What inspired you to pursue a career in law?

I have always been interested in the intellectual side of the law. I am fascinated by the study of law and the ways it shapes our society. Luckily, the practice of law allows me to carry that curiosity into my day-to-day work.

🔹 What area of law are you most passionate about and why?

I spend the majority of my practice helping entities and individuals protect their business interests, whether through actions for breach of contract or business torts. It is greatly rewarding to see these disputes to a resolution and successful path forward for clients.

🔹 What unique skills or experiences do you bring to the firm?

Before joining private practice, I had the opportunity to clerk for a federal judge on the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals. The clerkship gave me valuable insight into the decision-making process behind the bench, which I’ve carried into my litigation practice.

🔹 Can you share a memorable case or client success story?

I recently filed a motion to dismiss on behalf of a client, arguing that the other side had no legal basis to maintain its claims. Rather than oppose the motion, the other side conceded and withdrew its claims! I was able to use my knowledge of the law and persuasive argument to save a client from the headache and expense of litigation.

Golf, Running, Hiking & Crochet

🔹 Lastly, what's one fun fact about yourself that people might not know?

I spent my freshman (plebe) year at the United States Military Academy (West Point) before completing my undergraduate education at Samford University.
