Got a letter from the IRS about an audit? Take a breath. It's not as scary as it sounds.
Most audits aren't triggered by anything sinister. In fact, the majority happen simply because a return was flagged by an algorithm or didn't quite match statistical norms. Sometimes it's a math error. Sometimes it's a big bonus year. It doesn't mean you did anything wrong.
What it does mean is that how you respond matters.
Here's what most people don't know going in:
🔹 You have 30 days to respond, but waiting costs you (interest accrues daily)
🔹 You should only provide exactly what's requested. Don't volunteer extra information
🔹 You don't have to face the IRS alone. You have the right to professional representation
🔹 If you disagree with the outcome, you can appeal, all the way to court if necessary
Tax season just ended, which means audit notices are making their way into mailboxes right now. If one lands in yours, don't panic. Get prepared.
