The Fourth of July is one of the busiest boating weekends of the year and one of the most dangerous. Alcohol, heavy boat traffic, and nighttime navigation can create serious risks. If you're enjoying the water this holiday, designate a sober captain and make sure everyone gets home safely. Happy Fourth of July from Smith Law Center.

Lawyers, join our Samantha Cohn on October 19, 2026 as she teaches “Civil Juries in Virginia: From Venue to Verdict”.

In Virginia civil litigation, understanding where a case is filed, how a jury is selected, and the procedural rules governing trial practice can be just as important as the case's underlying merits. Virginia’s unique statutory framework governing jurisdiction, venue, jury trials, and voir dire presents strategic considerations that every litigator must understand before stepping into the courtroom. Virginia civil litigation attorneys should attend this program to gain a practical understanding of the procedural and strategic considerations involved in preparing and presenting a civil jury trial in Virginia state courts.

Attendees will learn the distinctions among court jurisdictions, the statutory framework governing venue and venue transfer, and the practical considerations attorneys should evaluate when determining where to file and try a case. The program will also provide an overview of Virginia jury practice, including jury composition, juror qualifications, jury panel selection procedures, voir dire strategy, juror research, peremptory strikes, strikes for cause, Batson challenges, and the use of jury instructions and verdict forms in civil litigation.

This program is designed for attorneys practicing in Virginia or intending to appear in Virginia courts who currently handle or anticipate handling civil jury trials. Both newer litigators seeking foundational knowledge and experienced trial attorneys looking to refine their understanding of Virginia-specific jury trial procedure and strategy will benefit from this course. Any attorneys with experience in civil litigation who are interested in Virginia civil jury procedures are also encouraged to attend.
