Losing your paperwork feels like losing the case. It usually isn't.

Almost everything that matters exists somewhere else too. The dealer has every repair order on their system. The manufacturer has its own record of what was claimed back against your warranty. Your phone has the dates, the photos, and the messages you sent your service advisor. Whoever financed the car has the contract and the full payment history.

Most of it can be requested, and that is a part we handle.

People assume building a case means gathering something they do not have yet.

Usually the opposite is true. The single most useful document is the one handed over at the service desk, every time, including the visits that ended in nothing found. Those are not blank pages. They are dated proof that you raised it and they looked.

Keep every one of them. If you have lost some, the dealer has copies and so does the manufacturer.

Thirty seconds at the service desk is worth more than almost anything else you can do.

Before you sign the repair order, read the customer states line. That sentence is your complaint as someone else wrote it down, and it is what a reviewer reads two years later. Noise becomes a grinding noise from the front right under braking, or it stays noise.

If it does not match what you said, ask them to change it. They can, and it is a normal thing to ask for.

People put off calling because they think their file is not good enough yet.

A strong file is four things. Every repair order, including the visits that found nothing. Dates, starting from when the problem first appeared rather than when it became unbearable. Anything you recorded yourself. And the contract you signed.

That is it. Most people have three of the four sitting in a drawer already.

Most people wait longer than they should.

The pattern is the same every time. Something is wrong, the dealer looks at it, it does not get fixed, and the whole thing gets filed under deal with it later.

If you have one or two repair records on the same problem, that is already enough to have a conversation. You do not need to work out for yourself whether you have hit some threshold, and you should not be waiting to find out.

Keep taking it in. Keep the paperwork. And call us.

Most lemon law firms work from the paperwork. We start with the car.

The repair order is the dealer's version of the visit. No codes found. Could not duplicate. Operating as designed. That is their record, written by them.

So we have our own in-house vehicle specialist. The car gets inspected and its diagnostic data pulled independently, separate from whatever the dealership did or did not do. Then the two go side by side. Where a dealer wrote nothing found and the data says otherwise, that gap becomes part of the record.

It is also why we ask to see the car early. The sooner we look at it, the more of the history we can document while it is still happening.

NEW. It is one word on the contract, and it decides which law protects you.

California's strongest warranty protection is built around new vehicles. What matters is not what the lot called the car, it is what the paperwork says it is. A demo, a loaner or a courtesy vehicle can have almost no miles on it and still not have been sold to you as new.

So before you sign, find the line that states the vehicle's condition. If it does not say new, ask why, and ask them to put the answer in writing. Thirty seconds at the dealership, against a much harder conversation two years later.
