ICYMI: The Colorado Sun reported on the wrongful death lawsuit Cannon Law filed on behalf of the families of Jorge Sanchez Peña, Alejandro Espinoza, Carlos Espinoza Prado, and Oscar Espinoza, four of the six men who died at a Keenesburg dairy in August 2025.

The article details the families' allegations that the dairy owner knew the manure management system was failing months before the pipe ruptured and did not fix it. It also explains the lawsuit's argument that the deaths qualify as felonious killings under Colorado law. That designation would allow the families to seek damages beyond the state's cap on noneconomic losses.

Meet Kate Kacena, the newest Associate Attorney at Cannon Law.

Kate joins us after two years clerking for a Colorado district court judge, where she saw firsthand how cases are argued and decided from the bench. She earned her law degree from the University of Colorado Law School and is passionate about making sure injured people have a real voice when they're up against large corporations and insurance companies.

Outside the office, you can usually find Kate with her dog, at the gym, or in the kitchen. Welcome to the team, Kate!

Founding Partner Sam Cannon spoke with Latino USA about the deaths of six workers at Prospect Valley Dairy in Colorado, including a father and his two sons, the youngest of whom was 17 years old. All six died from acute exposure to hydrogen sulfide in the underground pump room of the dairy's manure management system on August 20, 2025.

Sam represents the families of four of the workers who died. The episode examines what can be done to prevent incidents like the one at the dairy, and what elected officials, farm owners, and community members owe to one of the country's most vulnerable workforces.

Founding Partner Sam Cannon recently took the spoke at the 4th Annual CO Safety Summit, presented by the National Carbon Monoxide Awareness Association and partner organizations.

During the session “Preserving the Evidence: Proving Carbon Monoxide Injuries in Court,” Sam joined Gordon Johnson of the Carbon Monoxide Law Group to share legal insight on investigating carbon monoxide exposure and preserving the evidence needed to support injured people and their families.

The summit brought together fire service leaders, public health professionals, safety advocates, and legal professionals working to prevent carbon monoxide injuries and improve the response when exposure occurs. Sam’s participation reflects his continued commitment to sharing practical strategies that help protect communities and strengthen accountability.

Nearly one year after six workers died at a Keenesburg dairy farm, Cannon Law has filed a wrongful death lawsuit on behalf of the families of Jorge Sanchez Peña, Alejandro Espinoza, Carlos Espinoza Prado and Oscar Espinoza.

The lawsuit alleges the men were exposed to deadly hydrogen sulfide gas after a manure management system was remotely reactivated and a pipe ruptured, releasing manure water into an underground pump pit. It further alleges the dairy knew the piping system was unstable and failed to provide gas monitors, forced ventilation, rescue equipment or a rescue plan.

Sam is honored to stand with these families as they seek answers, accountability, and justice for losses that should never have occurred.
