When people hear "estate planning," they often think about what happens after someone passes away.

But estate planning is also about maintaining control during life's transitions. It can help determine who manages your property, who makes healthcare decisions if you're unable to do so, and how your loved ones are supported when important decisions need to be made.

Good planning gives you the opportunity to make those choices on your terms instead of leaving uncertainty behind for others to navigate.

August is National Make-a-Will Month, a timely reminder to ask yourself an important question:

Do I have a will that reflects my current wishes?

Many people know they should have a will, but life changes quickly. Marriage, children, grandchildren, a new home, or changes in finances can all impact whether your existing plan still meets your needs.

A will is an important part of protecting your loved ones and providing guidance for the future. But the most effective plans are designed around your unique family, assets, goals, and priorities.

If it’s been a while since you reviewed your estate plan, or if you haven’t created one, now is a great time to start. Schedule a consultation with our team at https://davissimmons.law.

Good estate planning starts with the end in mind.

Before discussing documents or legal strategies, it helps to think about the bigger picture:

– Who do you want to protect?
–What do you want to preserve?
– Who do you trust to make decisions on your behalf if needed?
– What kind of legacy do you have to leave behind?

The answers to these questions help shape a plan that reflects your values, goals, and the people who matter most to you.

The greatest benefit of planning is not legal. It is emotional.

When your wishes are clearly documented, your family does not have to guess, debate, or navigate court processes during an already difficult time.

My focus is on planning and understanding, not simply preparing documents. Your estate plan should reflect your values, your relationships, and the legacy you want to leave.

If life has changed due to a move, a new grandchild, a new business, or health updates, it may be time to refresh your plan. Call me at 910-491-9044 to schedule a review and ensure your legacy continues to bring peace and clarity to those you love.

A will directs how your property is distributed after death. In North Carolina, it must go through probate, a court-supervised process.

A revocable living trust can manage assets during your lifetime and allow properly titled assets to pass outside of probate. It may also provide continuity if you become incapacitated.

The question is not whether you need more documents. The question is whether your plan aligns with your goals, family structure, and long-term vision.

If you are unsure which strategy aligns with your circumstances, I’m here to help: davissimmons.law

Estate planning is not about paperwork. It is about protecting your family from confusion, delay, and unnecessary court involvement. A simple starting checklist includes:

🔹Will or Revocable Living Trust
🔹Advance Healthcare Directive
🔹Durable Power of Attorney
🔹Updated Beneficiary Designations

Without these documents, families may face delays in probate or court intervention in North Carolina.

A clear, comprehensive plan protects your wishes and your loved ones.

If you are ready to begin building your legacy with clarity and intention, feel free to give me a call at 910-491-9044. I’m here to help.
