Greg Zempel Greg Zempel has served as the elected Kittitas County Prosecutor for 23 years. Greg Zempel has served as the elected Kittitas County Prosecutor for 22 years.

He was elected in 1994, at the age of 32, making him one of the youngest elected prosecutors in the state. Greg won his first four year term of office in November of 1994 with a focus upon offender accountability, victims’ rights, and improved office operations, including the development of an actual civil division to take legal matters that had been farmed out to private outside attorneys. Zempel

has since been re-elected five times and is very popular and well-respected in his community. In his role as prosecutor, Zempel has never lost his focus on victims, constantly striving to assure that their statutory and constitutional rights are held to be as important as the rights of defendants. He has handled almost every type of criminal case. He has also handled almost every type of civil matter that could face a county. He has practiced at every level of court in our system, from district court to the Washington State Supreme Court. He has tried well over 100 jury trials as a defense attorney (his former career) or prosecutor. Zempel was instrumental in creating the Sexual Assault Interagency Coalition and specialized sexual assault interviewer position. He was instrumental in creating a Group called Protecting Our Children, which is a community group that educated parents on protecting their children from molesters. He created a bad check enforcement program to assist business while providing offenders a way to avoid criminal prosecution for their actions if successful with repayment and education. Zempel also assisted in creating the Kittitas County Drug Court which functions to change the lives of drug addicts whose criminal conduct impacts our communities. He resides in Ellensburg with his wife and four children.

Have had an interesting time with folks still on the fence. One topic is the "Independent Expenditures". They have heard the incumbents complaining about money being spent against them. I have had about $300,000 +/- spent in my race from individuals who chose to spend their money in the race. The incumbents have benefited from spending by the Washington Education Association (WEA). The WEA has given each campaign the maximum contribution limit. They have recorded over $200,000 to a PAC they fund that has benefited the incumbents. They have not recorded 5 promotional mailings to their membership which they don't have to record as considered "member communication". That probably amounts to another $50,000+/- The funny thing that they don't mention: No one contributing to challengers has been a litigant in front of the court. The WEA has been involved in multiple cases before these justices and continues to be a party in cases pending in the courts. Apparently that is not an important consideration when talking about dollar amounts.

News from the Washington State Supreme Court today. The Justices on the court have voted to change the direction of the court today by not voting Justice Madsen in for a third term as Chief Justice. I have campaigned on a platform that Justice Madsen was, as the Chief, leading the court into unnecessary politics. Today the court has proven that by choosing a different path. I welcome the news but still realize there is much to do. We need a new perspective on the court and I will continue to crisscross the state until Tuesday evening to make sure I am apart of that new direction.

With its insistence on interfering in the Legislature’s role, it’s time for change on the state’s Supreme Court.
