You have seen the video. Now hear the story behind it.

This is my client, Carnell Givens. On April 2nd, Detroit police were chasing a young man they suspected of a curfew violation. That man ran into Carnell's home.

Carnell did everything right. He told officers there were kids inside. He put his hands up. He opened the door. He tried to talk to them.

Twenty police cars pulled up. And they beat him anyway.

In his own home. Hands up. No warrant. No crime committed.

We are suing the City of Detroit and every officer involved. Because what you saw in that video is not a mistake. It is a pattern. And the people of this city deserve better.

If this happened to you, call my office.

I have spent my career standing between power and the people it preys on. Today, I am proud to stand with two Metro Detroit families who refused to be silenced.

Carnell Givens. Willie and Sandra Hall. Different families. Different cities. Same story: Detroit police and Warren police forced their way into their homes without warrants, used excessive force against innocent people, and then filed felony charges to cover it up.

Every single charge was dismissed.

This is not a coincidence. This is a pattern. And patterns have to be confronted.

I am filing federal civil rights lawsuits on behalf of both families and I am calling on anyone else who has experienced this kind of abuse at the hands of Michigan law enforcement to come forward.

Your home is your sanctuary. The Constitution protects it. And I will too.

Two multi-million-dollar civil lawsuits have been filed against police departments in Detroit and Warren following allegations that officers entered homes without warrants. Both cases claim unlawful entry and excessive use of force.

Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison has been clear: if we want safer communities, we have to invest in the people doing the work.

That means fighting for better pay, stronger support, and real opportunities for the next generation of officers.

Now, that commitment is showing up in a big way, new DPD officers are starting at **$60,000–$90,000 after completing the academy.**

I grew up in a time when seeing a police car made people nervous.

As a kid, I remember the stress. People would see the lights and run, sometimes out of fear, sometimes just because that’s what you thought you were supposed to do.
What we’re seeing now is a real cultural shift in the city of Detroit.

More people are starting to see officers as part of the community, not separate from it.
We’re seeing growth in our neighborhoods. Businesses are coming back. Crime is going down. This is a great thing!
