With its privileges, the "No Fun League" strikes again! 😜
But in all seriousness, as disappointing as it is for some fans who planned to watch on not just a big screen but a YUUUGE screen with lots of other like-minded humans, Emagine does technically need the NFL's consent.
Even though the theater chain was providing tickets on a "first come, first served" free-of-charge basis, it would still be showing not just clips or images but showing the full broadcast - IN REAL TIME - &, though discounted, would also be making money off the viewing party from concessions. As owners of the copyright in the broadcast itself, the NFL can decide who can & cannot show it.
(For example, you can watch the game at a sports bar that pays for a subscription service, which includes an NFL broadcasting partner's channel or platform that purchased the rights to show it live.)
The NFL has prohibited the theater chain from showcasing Sunday's wild card game between the Lions and Rams at their locations, the company announced in a statement.
