A commercial truck may carry more than freight—it may carry a digital record of what happened.

Following a serious truck crash, important information may be found in:

• Electronic logging-device records
• Engine-control data
• GPS and fleet telematics
• Dash-camera footage
• Collision-warning and automatic-braking alerts
• Dispatch communications
• Inspection and maintenance records

But this evidence may not remain available indefinitely. Federal regulations require certain driving records and supporting documents to be retained for at least six months, while other electronic information may be overwritten or lost sooner depending on the system.

According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, pedestrian fatalities increased 98.4% between 2015 and 2025—nearly doubling in just ten years.
