So important to keep in mind! Just like trauma response can look different for each person, there are so many different kinds of trauma that can create barriers and impact a young person's safety, stability, and opportunity. Through our constellation of programs, RMCLC works to help children, youth and families navigate these barriers, however they present.

from

A trauma response is the nervous system’s way to keep your body safe in situations that the body interprets as threatening due to past experiences.

For some, a trauma response is to fight and react in an aggressive or violent manner.

Others will try to escape situations that trigger trauma to avoid activating the emotional patterns that feel hurtful and unsafe.

It is also possible to freeze and dissociate from the body, almost like creating a dreamy state of ignorance to the real-life situation, just to avoid feeling hurt.

People pleasing can also be a learned trauma response and a way to avoid conflict and triggering emotions.

Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved people in the US in 1865. We celebrate this day, and recognize that there is so much work still to be done. We see day-to-day in our advocacy how systems continue to impact the Black community disproportionately. We remain committed to serving ALL young people who have experienced trauma or instability, especially those most impacted by inequity, and to continue learning.

In honor of Juneteenth, our offices are closed. Here is what we are reading/watching/listening to:

Our Story

Our staff attorneys represent and advocate for abused, neglected, and at-risk children and youth. We implement individualized and innovative legal strategies to steer our child clients through the overwhelming legal system, pursuing what is best for each child. Our clinical consultants and educational advocates work in collaboration with our attorneys to promote stability, preserve relationships, access therapy, and address educational needs. Our specialized staff develop meaningful relationships with their clients and make informed decisions about placements, relationships, education, and other unmet needs. We are a nonprofit law firm that represents many of Colorado's abused, neglected and traumatized children each year. We are committed to creating stability for our child clients while pursuing a permanent, nurturing home. We also provide needed education programs for judges, fellow attorneys, law students and foster parents. We touch the lives of all of Colorado's abused and neglected children through our public policy reform. Founded in 1981, the Children's Law Center is a nonprofit organization that relies heavily on community support.
