Legacy planning goes beyond traditional estate planning.

At The Rains Law Firm, we believe it is not enough to help families transfer assets. True planning also considers the transfer of values, intentions, and meaning across generations.

There is a phrase that often guides our perspective:

“Plant trees under whose shade you may never sit.”

It reflects a core truth of multigenerational planning. The choices made today can have an impact far beyond the present moment, extending into future generations.

Legacy is not only financial. It is also deeply personal.

It invites important reflection:

What values define your life today?
What do you hope your family carries forward?
What do you want your legacy to represent?

Estate planning, when done thoughtfully, becomes more than documentation. It becomes a reflection of identity, intention, and care for those you leave behind.

This is what we call Purposeful Planning. Planning that aligns legal structure with personal meaning.

"For advisors, these conversations often surface opportunities to deepen client relationships and ensure planning strategies reflect both technical accuracy and personal intent.

We encourage advisors to revisit existing client plans periodically to ensure they still reflect current life circumstances, relationships, and long-term goals.

If you are looking to collaborate on client planning conversations or would like to better integrate legacy-focused discussions into your advisory relationships, we welcome the opportunity to connect.

Schedule a consultation with our team to explore how we can support your clients through Purposeful Planning.

Graduation season is here 🎓

And there’s one thing almost no parent is thinking about…

The moment your child turns 18, you lose the legal right to make medical and financial decisions for them.

Even if:
✔️ They’re still on your health insurance
✔️ You’re paying their bills
✔️ They still live at home

In an emergency, you could be shut out of critical decisions.

Most families don’t find this out until it’s too late.

✅ Make sure your family is protected. Schedule a complimentary conversation with one of our attorneys to get the right documents in place before your child turns 18.

According to a recent study, only 30% of Americans have wills, and less than 15% have a trust. To get a little more personal about how this affects us all, we'd like to take a moment to talk about Prince. Prince died intestate, meaning he was without a will. Because of this, his estate went through the probate process, causing a public legal battle lasting over six years.

While not all of us are Prince, we are people who need thoughtful plans for what happens next. We have multiple events these next few months with our attorneys, all of whom offer free consultations to avoid public legal disputes for those we love.

Join us at one of our upcoming events to learn more about estate planning options, (and maybe a few conversations about your favorite artists too!)

This month, we are proud to celebrate 10 years of serving Colorado families and business owners.

What began as a vision to provide thoughtful guidance through life’s most important decisions has grown into a decade of trusted relationships, meaningful work, and a team deeply committed to our clients and community.

We are incredibly grateful to everyone who has placed their trust in us over the years. It is a privilege to walk alongside our clients through some of life’s most important moments.

Thank you to our clients, referral partners, colleagues, and community for being part of this journey. We look forward to continuing to serve for many years to come.

"Do you want a receipt?" is the question everyone is asking these days, and suddenly, you're left with at least ten in your car's center console.

Some of us stash them away, and others will throw them out as soon as they can.

Even though we're all making our way into the digital age, there are still documents that are important (and unimportant) from everything from your checkbook to estate planning.

The right approach to that pile of important paper is usually somewhere in between the trash, the file cabinet, and your shred pile, and in the link below is a clear, practical guide to help you decide where it all ends up.

On Wednesday we asked: what happens if no one can step in to manage your finances?

If no one is legally able to manage your finances, your family may be left waiting, or forced into court.

Here’s how to prevent that:
✔ Name a trusted financial decision-maker
✔ Put the proper documents in place
✔ Make sure everything is current and accessible

Simple steps. Big impact.

A clear plan changes everything.

Want to make sure you’ve covered all the right pieces?

📨 Send us a DM to schedule a consultation with one of our attorneys and get clarity on where you stand.

What happens if you become incapacitated… and no one can legally manage your finances?

Bills still come due.
Accounts can be frozen.
And your family may have to go to court just to step in.

It’s a situation that adds stress to an already difficult time.

Check back Friday for a simple way to prevent it.
