🎶 "up here at Ashley…"

If you know, you know.

For those who don't, from what I can gather, a guy who worked at an Ashley Furniture store in Memphis started making freestyle rap videos inside the store, basically telling people to come shop. It doesn't seem like anyone at Ashley asked him to do it. He just thought it would be fun. The videos went viral, and from what's out there, corporate's response was to tell him to take them down. He didn't, and he was let go.

As an attorney who handles employment matters, this one is a good reminder of something that comes up with clients more than people might think. Work and social media don't mix as casually as we treat them. Even when something feels harmless, or actually helpful, employers still care about who's speaking for the company, what's being said, and whether anyone signed off on it. Most policies give them a lot of room to decide that for themselves.

Illinois is an at-will state, which means an employer can let someone go for almost any reason, or no reason at all, as long as the reason isn't an illegal one. That surprises people. There's this assumption that if you're doing something positive, or something that's clearly benefitting the company, you're protected. You're usually not.

I'm not going to weigh in on his specific situation because none of us know the full story, and these things almost always come down to facts you can't see from the outside. But the bigger takeaway is worth sitting with. If your job has a social media policy, read it. If you're not sure whether something is okay to post, ask before you post it, not after it goes viral.

Plot twist though, another store already scooped him up and he's been posting about it.

Meanwhile I've been humming "up here at Ashley" for three days straight.

Can my employer legally fire someone for any reason? While employment in Illinois is generally considered “at-will,” meaning an employer may terminate employment at any time, that rule has important legal limits. Honoring Dr. King’s legacy today and the work that remains. Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Today, we honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., whose work for justice, equality, and peace continues to shape our world.

During law school, I had a powerful experience standing outside the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee—the site where Dr. King spent his final moments. Seeing it in person was deeply moving and left a lasting impression on me. It was a humbling reminder of the immense courage and sacrifice behind his fight for civil rights.

Dr. King's legacy continues to teach and challenge us. His belief in nonviolent resistance shows the power of peaceful advocacy. His vision of equality calls us to address injustice wherever it exists. And his unwavering hope inspires us to keep striving for a better future, even when the road ahead is hard.

As Dr. King said, "The time is always right to do what is right." This is one of my favorite quotes of his because it’s a timeless reminder to act with integrity and courage, no matter the circumstances.

Is there something Dr. King said that resonates deeply with you? I’d love to hear your thoughts or reflections in the comments.

I’m especially excited to welcome John Cannon to Bolen Robinson & Ellis. This one means a great deal to me.

John is more than a colleague. He’s family.

I first started working for John when I was 20 years old. I was in college, knew I wanted to be a lawyer, and bothered him until he finally said, “Fine, kid, you can work here.” He was a partner at his firm at the time, and from the beginning he treated me with kindness, patience, and respect. Over the years, he became a mentor, a trusted friend, and someone I have always looked up to both professionally and personally.

More than a decade ago, John and I talked about how great it would be to work together again someday. I am thrilled to say that day has finally come. We are partners, and I could not be more grateful.

John has devoted his entire career to personal injury and workers’ compensation law, and he is exceptional at what he does. He brings decades of experience, deep knowledge, and, most importantly, a genuine heart for his clients. I have seen firsthand how much he cares. He takes the time to listen, explain, and guide people through some of the hardest moments of their lives. His advocacy is thoughtful, relentless, and rooted in compassion.

I am also so happy to welcome his wife Cindy and his longtime paralegal, whom I have known for more than a decade as well. Having people you trust and care about under the same roof is incredibly special.

John, I am so proud to call you a partner. I am thankful for your mentorship and friendship, and excited for what is ahead. BRE Law is better because you are here!

We’re pleased to welcome John Cannon to Bolen Robinson & Ellis LLP.

John brings over 25 years of experience practicing personal injury law, with a career dedicated to representing individuals who have been injured through no fault of their own. John is known for the personal attention he gives his clients, taking the time to explain the process, answer questions, and help people truly understand their options during difficult moments.

His depth of experience, thoughtful approach, and long-standing commitment to client advocacy align seamlessly with the values and standards of BRE Law. His client-first approach and commitment to guiding people through challenging situations make him a strong addition to the BRE Law team.

We’re excited to have John join the firm and look forward to the experience, care, and perspective he brings to our practice.
