This is a very necessary conversation for a very uncertain time. In the blink of an eye the SCOTUS dismantled the Voting Rights Act — legislation that for decades served as one of the nation’s strongest protections against voter suppression and discrimination at the ballot box. At a time when access to voting continues to shape the future of our communities, this decision has left many people asking: where do we go from here?

Join the L. Clifford Davis Legal Association and the Maryellen Hicks Black Women Lawyers Association on Tuesday, May 19 at noon for an important discussion examining the impact of the Callais decision, the history and legacy of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, and where we go from here.

Our panelists will bring a wealth of knowledge, experience, and perspective while also providing tools and strategies to help move us forward during this critical moment in our nation’s history.

This is more than a conversation about the past — it is a conversation about the present and the future of voting rights, civic engagement, and protecting democracy.
All are invited to attend.

🚨 Texas Attorney Held In Contempt After Allegedly Repeatedly Using Racial Slur In Court 🚨

A sanctions hearing was scheduled Wednesday morning in Brazoria County after attorney Michael Phillips was reportedly held in contempt during a family court proceeding.

According to a press release, Phillips allegedly repeatedly used the N word in open court during a contentious family law trial involving attorney Brenda Derouen, a Black female attorney representing the petitioner in the case.

The release states the incident happened during cross examination after discussions involving evidence, character, and prior conduct connected to the case. Derouen reportedly asked the court for permission to briefly step out after feeling overwhelmed and disrespected.

The court later held Phillips in contempt, with a sanctions hearing set for May 6 in Brazoria County’s 300th District Court.

The press release describes the incident as “racialized courtroom conduct” and is calling for accountability within the legal system.

Year 15. WOW. What have I learned? I'm no longer timid about my gift anymore. Went through A LOT to get here. I know what I know and for so long it was scary to realize truly how my brain works and how I overcome. I'm grateful for this place I am currently in. Looking forward to the next 15 years. Hopefully I will be able to announce retirement. Happy Anniversary to ALL my fellow legal peeps. Baby it's ONLY UP from here.

Definitely going to be a long battle fought. Any type of estate planning that comes near the end of life is always going to be susceptible to challenges. It's always best to try and get these matters handled before then.
