BACK TO SCHOOL CHECKLIST FOR DIVORCED PARENTS

1. Be involved.
It’s a busy time, getting back into the swing of things. The routine for kids of divorced parents can be complicated and overwhelming at first, particularly if children have split time in two homes. There’s a lot of moving parts. The more in the game you are, the better you are able to anticipate needs, outline expectations and control chaos, and the more secure your child will feel. Active, engaged parents build connection by sharing school experiences with their children; they also present more favorably should custody modification ever be considered. So go to open houses, teacher conferences, special events and ordinary ones too. Even the everyday, small moments are big ones to your kids.

2. Make sure the school has a copy of your parenting plan.
Don’t assume the other parent has provided one. Be proactive. Having a clear outline regarding custody, one that explicitly details your rights and parenting time, should help minimize issues surrounding access to your child as it relates to school time and information. If allowed per your parenting plan, for example, you will want to be able to pick up your child from school or be a guest at story time or lunch time, if so desired, as well as have access to report cards, grades and any school communications.

3. Connect with teachers.
Teachers are the direct line to your child. Check in with them early and often to update them on any changes and receive crucial feedback on your child’s progress. Open communication helps ensure teachers can support your child in the best possible way and you can, likewise, help your child navigate any school-related issues as needed.

4. Establish and execute an action plan with your co-parent.
Managing school schedules, supplies, activities and responsibilities requires dedication, cooperation, practice and patience. Communication and consistency are keys to success. Make sure you discuss what your child needs, both physically and emotionally, and have a plan in place to handle any mishaps. For example, how will you handle if (when!) books, electronics, or uniforms are left at the other parent’s house; what are expectations for homework and studying, grades, and behavior. Establish a united front and put systems in place to facilitate success, which might include checklists, rewards and consequences; then discuss things clearly with your kids.

5. Most importantly, watch and listen to your kids.
In the beginning of the year, especially, it can be exhausting for kids (and parents!) to get reacclimated to the school schedule. Prioritize health, nutrition and sleep, and look for signs to tell you how your child is adjusting and if he/she may be struggling. Allow some time to settle into a new routine, but also seek support if needed, including for yourself, if you feel additional resources can help ease a situation and set your family up for success.

6. Have fun!
Be positive and instill a love of learning in your children. These years fly by fast. Try to embrace the chaos, practice and model patience when feeling frustrated or overwhelmed with schedules and responsibilities, and enjoy this time of learning and exploration as you watch your kids grow🤗

To some, the idea of mediation may seem like settling, like settling for less than you deserve. After all, in a divorce there are two sides. Shouldn’t there be a winner and a loser; shouldn’t there be someone clearly to blame and then a victim who deserves compensation?

Here’s why that logic doesn’t always hold up: once you are married, you are joined. So the divorce is a joint problem. Like it or not, the best way to fix a joint problem is by working together on a joint resolution; something that can be hard to do for couples who have decided to end their marriage. That’s why you need a skilled attorney. One who can listen without prejudice, help you to clearly articulate your needs and wants, and then guide the process towards a resolution that helps you achieve your goals.

The goal isn’t to be the winner. The goal is to dissolve your marriage and be able to walk away with what is fair and equitable. And to find some peace. It is no easy task. But the better path is often to come to that agreement while still working with the other side, while you still have the ability to negotiate and the power to make choices that work for you and your family, rather than leaving your fate to the determination of a judge, no matter how compelling you believe the facts may be.

Our experienced attorneys are fierce advocates and skilled negotiators. They know how to get things done. But they also know when compromise has been exhausted and court is the better option. Make no mistake: sometimes mediation simply will not work and heading to court is the best course of action. Our attorneys are just as fierce in the courtroom as they are at the negotiating table. They are ready to fight for you and with you, no matter the arena.

Times are tough these days. We get it. We feel it too.

While clipping coupons can be smart for buying groceries, and thrifting is a great, even trendy, option for finding deals on clothes, looking for a bargain, one-price-fits-all lawyer may not be your best bet when hiring a family law attorney.

Experience matters. Knowing the intricacies of family law matters. Having the flexibility to dedicate as much or as little time as needed to your case to ensure the best possible outcome matters. At RBA, we work thoroughly and efficiently towards a resolution, not to fit into a formula for financial profitability based on case work and billable hours.

Family law is all we do. We do it extremely well, some would argue the best. We are driven by passion and purpose to listen to our clients’ needs and develop a personalized strategy tailored specifically to their case. Some cases are extremely complex and others are rather cut and dry. The one consistency is your team’s dedication to managing your case with integrity and resolve, and with scrupulous attention to detail. Our focus is on our clients, not the clock.

Your legal team is no place to try to cut corners.

Sometimes you really do get what you pay for.
