🎓Did you know that one your child turns 18, you no longer automatically have the same authority to access certain medical information, make healthcare decisions, or handle financial matters on their behalf?

Before they head to campus, consider talking with your college student about:

✔️ Healthcare Power of Attorney — allows someone they choose to make healthcare decisions if needed.
✔️ Financial Power of Attorney — can give a trusted person authority to handle specified financial matters.
✔️ HIPAA Authorization — can allow designated individuals to receive protected medical information.

College is a big step toward independence. Making sure a few important documents are in place can help both students and parents feel a little more prepared.

September is National Preparedness Month. Are you legally prepared for the unexpected?

We often think about being prepared in terms of emergency supplies, insurance, or having a plan for our homes—but preparation should include your legal affairs, too.

If something happened tomorrow, would the people you trust have the legal authority they need to step in?

Having important documents in place can help ensure someone you trust is able to manage financial matters, make healthcare decisions, and carry out your wishes when you aren't able to do so yourself.

A complete plan may include a:

✔️ Last Will & Testament
✔️ Financial Power of Attorney
✔️ Healthcare Power of Attorney
✔️ Living Will
✔️ HIPAA Authorization

Being prepared isn't about expecting something to go wrong. It's about making things easier for the people you love if the unexpected ever happens.

This National Preparedness Month, take a few minutes to ask yourself: Is my legal life prepared?

When you become a parent, your priorities change. Your estate plan should too. ❤️

As a parent, you spend every day protecting your children. But have you thought about who would care for them—and how they'd be provided for—if the unexpected happened?

Estate planning isn't just about dividing assets. It's about making some of the most important decisions your family may ever face.

A thoughtful estate plan can help you:
✔️ Nominate a trusted guardian to care for your minor children.
✔️ Create a plan for assets your children may inherit.
✔️ Help provide financial security and peace of mind for the people you love most.

While no one likes to think about the "what ifs," having a plan in place is one of the greatest gifts you can give your family.

Protect what matters most—because your children deserve a plan as thoughtful as the future you're building for them.

Did you know?
If you die without a valid will, Ohio law—not your family—determines who inherits your assets.

Creating a will gives you the opportunity to decide how your estate is handled, who receives your assets, and how you can help make a difficult time a little easier for those you leave behind.

Estate planning isn't just about your possessions—it's about protecting the people you love.

📂 Good records are more than good business—they can be valuable legal evidence.

Businesses generate records every day, from invoices and emails to payroll reports and financial statements. While these documents help keep your business running smoothly, they may also play an important role if a legal dispute ever arises.

One important rule of evidence is the Business Records Exception to the Hearsay Rule, which may allow certain business records to be admitted in court when specific legal requirements are met.

That doesn't mean every document automatically qualifies, but maintaining accurate, consistent, and timely records can make a significant difference if your business is ever involved in litigation.

Strong recordkeeping isn't just good organization—it's good risk management.

If you have questions about protecting your business or developing sound business practices, Bratton Law is here to help.
