Who Looks Like a Lawyer?
This week in Mark Lewis’s Law, Film & Culture class, we turned to Legally Blonde and a question that follows us well beyond law school:
How much of what we call “professional” is really just what we’ve become accustomed to seeing?
Elle Woods is repeatedly underestimated because she doesn’t fit other people’s picture of intelligence, seriousness, or what a lawyer is supposed to look like. Yet some of the very qualities that make her seem out of place eventually help her see what others miss.
Of course, the lesson isn’t simply to “be yourself,” or that professional standards don’t matter. Elle must learn the law. She must prepare, work hard, develop judgment, and take herself and the job seriously.
But professional formation isn’t the same thing as conformity.
Perhaps part of becoming a good lawyer is learning the craft while resisting the idea that there is only one way to look, think, speak, or move through our profession. What makes us different may sometimes be precisely what allows us to see what others do not.
