Trick-or-treating starts right around dusk, which is the hardest time of day to see anything from behind the wheel.

Kids cut across yards, pop out from between parked cars, and run to the next house because their friends are already there. Half of them are dressed in black. Anyone who has ever driven through a neighborhood on Halloween knows this is coming.

When a child gets hit, the driver’s insurance company may try to blame the kid for running into the street, or the parents for not holding a hand tight enough. Ohio law treats young children differently than adults when it comes to fault, and that matters.

Workers' compensation covers part of your wages and part of your medical care. It does not account for what a serious injury does to the next twenty years of your life.

On a job site, the party responsible for your injury is often not your employer. A subcontractor who left a floor opening uncovered. An equipment company that skipped a required inspection. A general contractor who was told about a hazard weeks earlier and did nothing.

The driver who caused your crash carried the state minimum. Your hospital bill passed that number before you were discharged.

Most motorcycle crashes involving another vehicle happen the same way. A car turns left across the lane, and the driver says he never saw the bike.

Then the story starts to shift. The rider was speeding. He came out of nowhere. He was weaving between cars. Insurance adjusters lean hard on that assumption, because they know some jurors show up already believing it.

Skid marks, damage patterns, vehicle positioning, and traffic camera footage are harder to argue with than a driver's memory of what he did or did not see.

The driver who hit you may not be the only one who made a bad decision that night.

Ohio law can hold a bar or restaurant responsible for continuing to serve someone who was already visibly intoxicated. Proving it means pulling the tab, the timestamps, the security footage, and statements from whoever was working that shift.

That evidence has a short shelf life. Video gets recorded over on a loop. Servers quit and move out of state.

A pressure sore does not appear overnight. It takes days of someone not being turned, not being checked, not being noticed.
Ohio nursing homes are required to keep care plans, staffing schedules, and shift notes. Those records show how many aides were on the floor at 2 a.m. and how many residents each one was covering.

Families are usually told that their mother is frail, or that this is what happens at her age. State inspection reports sometimes tell a different story, and so do the facility's own charts.

A difficult delivery is not always just bad luck.

Ohio law holds dog owners responsible for the damage their animal causes. Most people don't find that out until it happens to them.

A bite to a child's face. Stitches. Scarring that follows them into adulthood. A dog that had bitten someone before, and no one warned the next family.

Homeowners insurance is supposed to cover this. Insurance companies still fight it, often by blaming the person who got bitten.
