PFAS continues to be one of the rare issues drawing bipartisan attention in Washington. Senators Maggie Hassan (D-NH) and Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) are backing legislation to prohibit intentionally added PFAS in food packaging and give the FDA enforcement authority. Regardless of party, there is growing recognition that PFAS contamination is an issue that needs to be addressed, and we agree!

PFAS are far less common in U.S. food packaging, thanks to a voluntary industry phaseout. But there’s still no federal law keeping them out. Sens. In the late 1990s, 3M hired a scientific-research firm to study how people across the country were exposed to one of 3M’s most toxic chemicals, known as PFOS. The firm, called Battelle, confirmed that PFOS were spreading to people, particularly in Georgia. In 1999, Battelle documented how PFOS reached people in and around Dalton, Georgia. To clarify the paths of contamination, Battelle drew 3M a diagram entitled “Human Exposure Dalton, GA Scenario,” which charted multiple paths of PFOS from “3M Manufacturing,” to “Carpet Mills,” to “Human Response.”
