GREAT QUESTION ➡️ If we separate but aren’t divorced yet, who pays the bills and who stays in the home?

There isn’t one automatic rule that applies to every couple.

Until a court enters an order or the spouses reach an enforceable agreement, separation can leave important financial and household issues unresolved.

Before moving out, stopping payment of bills, removing money from joint accounts, or making significant changes involving the children, it can be wise to speak with a family law attorney about how those decisions could affect the case.

This is exactly the kind of situation where getting legal advice BEFORE making a major move can be valuable.

Your college student may be 18…but are YOU able to still help in an emergency?

Sending a child off to college comes with a long checklist: tuition, housing, meal plans, textbooks, insurance…BUT there’s one important legal document many families overlook: A Young Adult Power of Attorney.

Once your child turns 18, they are legally an adult. That means parents may no longer automatically have the authority to handle certain financial, legal, or other important matters on their behalf—even when they’re still your dependent.

And if your student is attending college in another state, it’s especially important to plan ahead. Laws and requirements surrounding Powers of Attorney can vary from state to state, so having the appropriate documents in place before they’re needed can save your family unnecessary stress and complications.

A Young Adult Power of Attorney can give your college student the ability to designate a trusted person—often a parent—to act on their behalf in specified situations.

Woodard Law Firm can prepare a Young Adult Power of Attorney document for $150.

It’s a simple step that can provide valuable peace of mind as your child begins this new chapter of independence.

A prenuptial agreement isn’t about planning for divorce—it’s about planning responsibly for your future together. Just as you purchase insurance hoping you’ll never need it, a prenup is a practical way to protect both parties while entering marriage with clarity and confidence.

The best time to discuss a prenuptial agreement is well before your wedding day—not the week before, and definitely not on the eve of saying “I do.”

A prenuptial agreement gives both partners the opportunity to have thoughtful, honest conversations about finances, property, debt, business interests, inheritance, and future expectations without the pressure of an impending ceremony.

Creating a prenup early allows:

✔️ Plenty of time for open discussion
✔️ Independent legal review for each person
✔️ Careful consideration without feeling rushed
✔️ A stronger agreement that is less likely to be challenged later

If you’re engaged and have questions about whether a prenuptial agreement is right for you, the experienced attorneys at Woodard Law Firm can help you understand your options and guide you through the process with care and professionalism.
