I merged my practice into Beermann LLP in 2005 in large part because of the experiences I had opposing attorneys within the firm and having spent time getting to know those lawyers and the team that supported them. That same culture that brought me to Beermann LLP decades ago, has continued to grow as our firm has grown into the largest family law only firm in Chicago and now selected by cranes as one of the BEST PLACES TO WORK and I am honored to be part of that culture and tradition.

When something in a case shifts direction, I don’t let it sit unaddressed. I bring the client in, sit down face to face, and walk through exactly what’s changing and why.

People handle uncertainty a lot better when they understand the purpose behind a decision. Once they see how a change connects to the bigger goal, it stops feeling like a setback and starts feeling like part of the plan.

A case isn’t really about the case. It’s about what comes after it.

The hope is that whatever you’re working toward is something bigger and better: peace, strong relationships, being present for the people who matter most. Watching your kids grow, build their own lives, maybe have families of their own one day.

That’s the perspective I try to hold onto, for myself and for my clients. The legal process is temporary. What you’re building your life toward isn’t.

Remember your end goal. Battles matter less than winning the war.

Divorce brings out a competitive side in a lot of people. It’s an emotional process, and I understand the instinct to want to come out on top.

But when kids are involved, it’s worth stepping back for a moment. What are they seeing? What are you showing them about how to handle conflict?

Think about where you want to be years from now. Will you be able to sit next to your former spouse at your daughter’s wedding? That question changes how people approach the entire process.

Family law isn’t just about the formula, what the statute says or how the numbers work out.

I want my clients to come out of this process with something more than a resolution. I want them to have a sense of rebirth, a real look toward a future that feels positive again.

It’s like a plant just starting to sprout. You’re not fully there yet, but you’re on your way. My job isn’t done when the case ends. It’s done when you’re ready to flower and go do your thing.

Our newest furry family member named Willow and I started our Saturday morning taking in some fresh air and a little perspective. 🐾

There’s something grounding about mornings like that, especially after a week spent helping people through some of the hardest moments of their lives. Out there, you really gain an appreciation for farmers and just how hard they work, right up there with divorce attorneys, if you ask me.

Hope your weekend has had its own version of that, whatever that looks like for you.

And as my sweatshirt said this morning: raise your game. 💪

"Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, and others make it happen" - Michael Jordan

Grateful for another year of making things happen to help families in the throes of divorce.

Grateful for my team and colleagues at our firm, Beerman LLP.

And grateful to be included in the 2027 edition of The Best Lawyers in America® for Family Law.

What are you going to make happen before the end of the year?

Saying you’ve tried a lot of cases doesn’t mean much on its own. The real question is whether you’re good at it.

Do you understand the rules of evidence well enough to use them, not just follow them? Can you tell when a judge has actually stopped listening, when the pencil goes down or the typing stops? That’s the moment you know you’ve lost them, and you have to adjust.

The same goes for a witness on the other side. Getting them to walk through the story you need, even when they don’t want to help you, takes more than knowing the law.

That’s the part of trial work that doesn’t show up on a resume. It’s a skill, and it’s one you build over years, not one you’re born with.
