It arrives at eleven at night, which is when these things always arrive. A journal editor a researcher has never met, asking him to review a manuscript. Four weeks. No payment. No credit.

He types a polite decline, sends it, and moves the email to trash. He's done this, by his own count, something like seventy times.

Four years later, building his immigration case, he's asked a simple question: what evidence do you have that your field seeks out your judgment? He knew the answer was yes, roughly twenty times. He could prove four.

This week's STEM Meets Immigration explains why peer review invitations are some of the rarest evidence a researcher can offer, because it's the one thing you can't produce yourself, someone else has to ask, and the one habit (a single email folder) that makes sure you never lose the proof again. Before your naturalization interview, five things to do: One. Confirm which civics test you are taking. If you filed Form N-400 on or after October 20, 2025, you are taking the 128-question 2025 test. If you filed before that date, you are taking the 100-question 2008 test. Two. Update your current-name answers for President, Vice President, Speaker of the House, Chief Justice, and the governor of your state. Three. Assemble your documents: interview notice, green card, photo ID, all passports, Social Security card, tax transcripts, and marriage documents if applicable. Four. Practice your civics answers out loud in English. Five. Arrive 30 minutes early. Episode 14 of our free series walks through every step of the interview day in detail. In the waiting room before her naturalization interview, she sat next to a man from Ethiopia. He was on his second attempt. He had failed the civics test the first time by two questions. He had spent the last three months studying. He told her: this time I know every answer. I practiced out loud every night. She said: me too. They both passed that morning. Episode 14 of our free citizenship test series is now live. Everything you need to know about the day of your naturalization interview: what to bring, what to expect, how the English test and civics test are administered, and what happens if something does not go as planned. This is the episode that turns months of preparation into a single confident morning. Full free series at https://youtu.be/NBjSGuo0NAc.

You are married, you are ready to apply for a green card, and then you hit the very first big decision and freeze, because there is not one way to do this. There are two.

One path lets the immigrant spouse stay in the U.S. the whole time, at home, together. The other can require leaving the country to finish at a consulate abroad, and for some people, leaving triggers a multi-year bar on returning. Our new episode walks through the fork in the road calmly: what each path is, who each is for, the overstay forgiveness for spouses of citizens, the provisional waiver that keeps families together, and an honest look at the 2026 policy change behind the headlines. We follow a couple, Sofia and Ben, as they face the choice.

Two cards arrive before the green card β€” and they're not the same thing. One lets you work. Leaving the country without the other can end your whole case. πŸ“‹

Stefan has a job offer on his kitchen counter that he has not answered in three weeks, and a work permit in his wallet that says he is allowed to take it. He is a mechanical engineer in Charlotte who came from Stuttgart, and he is somewhere in the middle of a green card case. Two cards arrived in the post that he did not entirely understand, and neither of them is the green card. Here is what nobody explained to him. One of those cards is permission to work, and it is not tied to any employer. The other is permission to travel, and it is the one that ends cases: leaving the country while the application is pending, without that document approved and in hand, can be treated as abandoning the whole thing. Not delaying it. Abandoning it. Adjustment of status is the most common process in American immigration and the one people understand least while they are standing on it. We walked through all of it in this week's Expert Guide, in plain language, with real answers. Watch full video here: https://youtu.be/TJBhAqZ6CCE

A surgical robotics engineer collected 11 expert letters for her immigration case. Nine were nearly worthless β€” sincere, glowing, and useless, because they came from people who already knew and liked her. The letters that actually mattered came from researchers who'd used her work and never met her. This week's STEM Meets Immigration explains why. Watch full video at https://youtu.be/G8LGMiyMBL0

Meera keeps her green card in the kitchen drawer with the takeaway menus, and she has not looked at the expiry date in nineteen months. She is a clinical data manager in Atlanta who came from Hyderabad, married to Anand, a software architect who became a US citizen years before they met. The card came through two years ago after a process that swallowed a year of their lives, and the day it arrived they went out for dinner and stopped thinking about immigration entirely. That was the whole point. Here is what she does not know: that is not the ten-year card. It is a two-year card, because their marriage was young when it was approved, and in the ninety days before it expires they have to file again, together, and show the marriage is still real. Missing that window does not delay the status. It ends it. The good news is that the fix takes four minutes: find the card, check the date, count back ninety days, and write it down. We walked through the whole second stage in this week's Expert Guide, in plain language, with real answers. Learn more at https://youtu.be/iJZCtlEHBU8
