“But somewhere I read of the freedom of assembly. Somewhere I read of the freedom of speech. Somewhere I read of the freedom of press. Somewhere I read that the greatness of America is the right to protest for right. And so just as I say we aren’t going to let any dogs or water hoses turn us around, we aren’t going to let any injunction turn us around. We are going on. We need all of you.”

What Jackie Robinson accomplished took incredible courage and bravery. He made the country a better place. He is a true American hero. His picture hangs in my office. What could be the reason for this, other than to attempt to erase the history of brave African Americans? Can’t we hang onto our heros?

I was thrilled to host Justice Kyra Harris Bolden last night in support of her reelection campaign. Justice Bolden joined the Michigan Supreme Court on January 1, 2023, when she was appointed by Governor Whitmer, and must remain on the Court. She is intellectually honest and a strong legal mind. Please let your clients, friends, and family know to vote for her in November.

Deborah Gordon Law’s recent win at the Michigan Supreme Court changed the law in Michigan and expanded rights for employees who report unsafe conditions at work. 👷🏾‍♂️👩🏼‍🔬👩🏽‍🔧The Court found that state regulators like OSHA should not be an employee’s only option for recourse after being retaliated against for a workplace safety concern and those employees are now permitted to file directly in court. 🗂️This is an important ruling for employees; employers are no longer protected from litigation if they retaliate against an employee for speaking up about safety.

Our client Cleveland Stegall was an excellent employee who was fired after he complained about working in an area marked Danger- “asbestos.” ⚠️🦠 It has taken 8 years to get to this point and we are looking forward to making things right for Cleveland.

Laura, a police officer with 17 years’ experience, was the first female ever promoted to Seargent or any command officer position at Almont. Many of the male officers refused to accept her in a supervisory position. One officer stated that women should not be police officers but “barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen” and wrote a memo to the Chief of Police demanding that Plaintiff be “demoted” and/or “reprimanded.”

One year into her role as Sergeant, Plaintiff filed a written complaint of sexual harassment and discrimination. The Chief admitted that Plaintiff was called a “bitch” and a “cunt” and that male officers urged him to remove her. Plaintiff was then fired for a trumped-up reason.

Federal Judge Matthew Leitman denied Almont’s motion to dismiss the case, stating on the record, “I think not only could a jury find that the reasons were pretextual, “but that they were a pretext for both gender discrimination and retaliation.”

Laura is continuing her career as a police officer in another community.

On December 29, 2023, Deborah Gordon Law received a $938,000 award for client Dr. Sonia Eden after an arbitration trial against Tenet, owner of the DMC.

Dr. Eden, who studied Mechanical Engineering at Yale University and earned her medical degree at the University of Michigan, is one of thirty-three Black female neurosurgeons in the United States. In 2020, she became the first Black female Chief of Neurosurgery at the DMC. Dr. Eden was terminated by Tenet a few weeks after she filed an internal race and gender complaint.

The arbitrator found Dr. Eden “very credible”, and that she had been retaliated against. The award included $500,000 for emotional distress. Dr. Eden is continuing her career at a leading brain and spine center. She is pictured in the second photo with her mother, Doris LaGrone from Detroit, at the 2024 Rose Bowl.
