Your principles matter, but during divorce, standing your ground on every issue can come at a high price. ⚖️

Sometimes, protecting your future means knowing which battles are worth fighting and which ones are costing you more than they are worth. The goal is not to compromise your values, but to make strategic decisions that protect what matters most.

In divorce, being right and getting the best outcome are not always the same thing.

Who is on the deed is not always the whole story in family law.

Property ownership, marital interests, contributions, and the circumstances surrounding the property can all matter when determining what happens during a divorce or family law dispute.

If you are facing a property issue, make sure you understand the bigger picture before assuming the deed tells the entire story.

Does fault matter in a divorce?

In Michigan, the answer is more nuanced than you might think. In Sparks v. Sparks, the Michigan Supreme Court addressed how marital fault can factor into the division of marital property, even though Michigan is a no fault divorce state.

That means the circumstances surrounding the breakdown of a marriage may still matter when the court is determining an equitable division of property.

If you are facing divorce in Oakland County, understanding how fault may affect your case is important. Every divorce is different, and the specific facts can make a difference.

Can your ex’s new boyfriend or girlfriend actually affect custody? The answer is more complicated than you might think. A new relationship alone does not automatically justify changing custody, but the circumstances surrounding that relationship can become relevant to the court. Watch the video to learn what actually matters in a Michigan custody case.

Think your ex-spouse is making significantly more than they are reporting for child support?

Saying “I know they make more” is not enough. The real question is how you prove it.

From business records and financial documents to lifestyle evidence and inconsistencies in reported income, there are ways to dig deeper when the numbers do not add up.

In Michigan litigation, discovery is not the time to play games.

The scope of discovery is intentionally broad, and parties are generally expected to provide relevant information and documents that may lead to the discovery of admissible evidence. Understanding your discovery obligations early can make a significant difference in how your case is handled.

What is the purpose of spousal support in Michigan?

Spousal support is intended to address financial circumstances between spouses after or during a divorce. Depending on the facts of the case, the court may consider factors such as each spouse’s income, earning capacity, needs, the length of the marriage, and the parties’ standard of living when determining whether support is appropriate.

Every family law case is different, and there is no one size fits all formula for spousal support in Michigan.

As an Oakland County family law litigator, I help clients understand how the law may apply to their individual circumstances and what factors can affect a spousal support determination.

Stop and hear me out on this one. Divorce is not a one size fits all…..

My version of a Collaborative divorce begins with a different mindset. Both spouses hire their own attorneys who are committed to resolving issues through cooperation rather than conflict. When everyone is focused on respectful problem-solving, families can avoid unnecessary court battles.

An amicable approach can save time, reduce legal costs, and help preserve the peace for the entire family, especially when children are involved. Divorce may end a marriage, but it does not have to create lasting conflict.
