"A DC judge awarded the Proud Boys’ trademarks to downtown’s Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Church Monday. The ruling means that the far-right group can no longer use its name, and “clears the way for the church to try to seize any money that the Proud Boys might make by selling merchandise like hats or T-shirts emblazoned with their name or with any of their familiar logos, including a black and yellow laurel wreath,” the New York Times reports."

Metropolitan African Methodist Episcopal Church can seize any money the far-right group makes from selling merchandise.

Trump’s Executive Order ending birthright citizenship is preposterous. A president cannot amend the Constitution via Executive Order.

Section 1

All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.

Amending the Constitution, or removing an Amendment requires:

Steps to amend the Constitution
Proposal: Congress passes the amendment with a two-thirds majority vote in both the House and the Senate
Notification: Congress notifies the states of the proposed amendment
Ratification: Three-fourths of the states ratify the amendment
Announcement: The amendment is announced as part of the Constitution
The process of amending the Constitution can be lengthy and difficult.

I don’t see Executive Order in there anywhere…

Disney characters like Mickey Mouse haven't entered the public domain largely because of aggressive lobbying efforts by Disney, which led to the passing of the "Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act" in 1998, effectively extending copyright terms significantly, often called the "Mickey Mouse Protection Act"; this added several decades of protection to their characters, preventing them from entering the public domain as quickly as they otherwise would have. Even when the copyright on a character's original design expires, Disney can still maintain trademark protection on the specific visual representation of the character, preventing others from using a highly recognizable version without permission.

Have you wondered why we're getting all these bizarre horror movies like 'Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey' and 'Peter Pan; 's Neverland Nightmare?' It's because the copyrights have expired on the original works upon which these movies are based. In America, a copyright lasts for the life of the author + 70 years before they enter the public domain. Once a copywritten work enters the public domain, anyone can use the material as they see fit.

This is an interesting read. It's a Statement of Policy by the US Copyright Office published in The Federal Register. It discusses the Copyrightability of works created with the assistance of generative AI. One thing is certain if you tell an AI program to generate a song like Truckkin by the Grateful Dead, the output from the AI program cannot be copyrighted. However, what about the works that were created with the input or assistance of AI? The answer right now is: it depends. While it’s clear that content that was created by a single prompt will not be copyrightable, the jury is still out on how much AI-generated content In February 2023, the Office “concluded that a graphic novel comprised of human-authored text combined with images generated by the AI service Midjourney constituted a copyrightable work, but that the individual images themselves could not be protected by copyright.”
