Memorial Day has passed, but our reflections have not. As a veteran-owned Maine law firm, this day holds deep personal meaning for our team.

We pause to honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country and to recognize the loved ones they left behind. Their courage and sacrifice are the reason we enjoy the freedoms we work to protect every day, both in and out of the courtroom.

For those of us who have worn the uniform, Memorial Day is not just a long weekend; it is a time to remember friends, colleagues, and heroes who did not come home. Their names, their stories, and their families stay with us.

From all of us here, thank you to those who made the ultimate sacrifice. We remember you, we honor you, and we strive to serve our community in a way that is worthy of your legacy.

We are honored to have Dr. Owen Pickus as a part of our team. He brings us a unique advantage in being both an attorney and a physician.

Owen spent over 40 years as a practicing physician, specializing in internal medicine, hematology, and oncology. He served more than 22 years on the University of New England Board, chaired the State Advisory Board for AIDS and HIV under Governor McKernan, and became a trusted medical voice on WGME’s ‘Ask the Doctor’ and WGAN Radio’s ‘Healthline.’

In 2004, Dr. Pickus earned his J.D. from the University of Maine School of Law. Since then, he has devoted his career to representing victims of medical negligence, leveraging his extensive medical background to dissect records, expose errors, and build cases that withstand the fiercest scrutiny in court.

Dr. Pickus has secured some of the largest malpractice settlements in Maine history, including a $9.7 million malpractice verdict in a high-profile litigation for a woman whose cancer screenings were misread.

Today, as a part of Steve Smith Trial Lawyers, Dr. Pickus continues to bring unrivaled medical and legal expertise to every case. His ability to convert complex medical data into compelling, judge-ready, and jury-moving arguments sets him apart as one of the most effective and authoritative trial attorneys in the state.

In our family law practice, we often deal with high-net-worth individuals who are successful professionals or business owners. When a business is part of a divorce, one important valuation issue is whether some portion of the company’s value should be treated as personal goodwill rather than a divisible business asset. In Maine, courts have distinguished […]

In the 6 years since Steve Smith Trial Lawyers was founded, we have expanded our reach to over 5 states, with more actively in the works. This is in part due to our ability to work remotely.

We frequently help clients across the nation by collaborating with local counsel, as well as temporary licenses in a state, called 'pro hac vice'.

Milva Smith, our Director of Special Projects, discusses how important remote work is to our firm. We're grateful that technology has evolved to allow us this capability, and look forward to our continuing expansion.

What is the purpose behind charging a consultation fee? We aren't volume chasers. By not taking on every case, we can ensure each case receives the time, attention, and judgment it deserves.

This video explains how that process works, and why saying “no” is sometimes part of responsible legal counsel.

What factors go into determining the cost of a family law case? Seemingly simple cases don't always end that way, and it's often not within the client's control.
