When people are going through something serious, they often feel like they need to hold everything together.

But what actually helps most is usually much smaller than that.
A routine. A walk. Making coffee the same way every morning.
Showing up even when your mind is somewhere else.

These are what our in-house social worker calls "ordinary anchors." ⚓

They don't fix the situation. But they help people stay steady inside of it.

Legal situations don't pause life. Cases can take months. And people still have to keep going — showing up for their kids, their jobs, themselves — while everything feels uncertain.

In our work, we see how much those small steadying things matter.
You don't have to have it all together. You just have to keep finding the next small thing to hold onto. 🌿

Memorial Day is for a quieter kind of courage.

Pause for the families who carry absence into every summer. Pause for the parents, spouses, children, friends, and neighbors who learned to keep loving someone they can no longer call.

Remembrance is one way love stays present. Thank you for your service.

Not every story is understood at first glance. 👁️

The way someone speaks, reacts, makes decisions — or protects themselves — doesn't come out of nowhere.

It comes from culture. From family. From what they've learned it takes to survive. 🌱

In legal settings, those differences are often misread. Treated as red flags instead of context. Flattened into something they were never meant to be.

But context matters.

Not as an excuse. As understanding. 🤝

You can't fully represent someone if you don't take the time to understand where they're coming from.

That's not just good lawyering. It's the only kind we know how to do. ⚖️

The law team behind the work. 🌲

All month, we’ve been talking about what it means to be truly represented — not just defended.

Because the truth is:
people don’t just remember the outcome of a case.
They remember how they were treated while living through it.

The relationships matter.
The trust matters.
The way clients are spoken to, prepared, supported, and walked through uncertainty matters.

This is part of the team that shows up with people during some of the hardest moments of their lives — with steadiness, strategy, and care.

At Max Pines Law, we believe representation is personal.

Have you heard of "Alcohol Myopia?"

Alcohol myopia is when drinking narrows attention: short-term goals loom large while long-term danger fades. In New Mexico DWI cases, that science matters.

People often feel “fine” even while their reaction time and judgment drop.

New Mexico allows conviction if alcohol makes a driver less able “to the slightest degree” to drive safely, even aside from BAC numbers.

Heavier drinkers may feel normal at levels that still impair driving.

A criminal charge doesn't happen to one person.
It happens to a family. 👨‍👩‍👧

It happens to the partner who doesn't sleep. The parent who stops asking questions because the answers are too hard.

The child who notices something is wrong but doesn't have the words for it.

On the International Day of Families 🌱 — we think about the people in the waiting room. The ones whose names aren't on the case.

At Max Pines Law, we don't just defend a charge. We understand what's at stake on the other side of it.

People often hope an old charge will stop following them.
Sometimes it doesn't.

In New Mexico, some records may be expunged. Others remain, including DWI convictions. Over time, that can affect work, housing, licensing, and insurance in ways that wear people down.

Families feel that too.
A missed job chance.
A harder time finding a place to live.
More pressure on one household income.

Knowing what can be cleared and what can't helps people make real plans for the future. Clear information gives people a better chance to plan, rebuild, and keep going.

Many people hope time alone will erase a criminal record. In New Mexico, some charges can be expunged; others stay, including DWI convictions under the state’s Expungement Act. That reality can affect jobs, housing, licensing, and even car insurance for years.

If your family has any prior cases, set aside time to learn which offenses might be eligible for expungement and what positive steps, like treatment, employment, and community involvement, support second-chance outcomes when the law allows.

If you need that kind of encouragement, sign up to get regular updates from our desk to your inbox.

The day after Mother’s Day doesn’t get talked about much.

For some, yesterday was full of flowers and full tables. 💐
For others, it was quieter. Or harder. Or both.

We find ourselves thinking about the families we work with on days like this —
the mothers worrying about a son or daughter caught in the legal system,
the children wondering what comes next for someone they love,
the families doing their best to hold things together while something difficult unfolds.

Legal cases don’t pause for holidays.
And the weight families carry doesn’t either.

If your family is navigating something hard right now — we see that.
And we’re here. 🌵
