Employment issues can arise quickly as a business grows, and getting them wrong can be costly.

That is why Estrella, LLC was proud to participate once again in EnterPRize 2026, Grupo Guayacán’s Annual Entrepreneurship Program, which supports emerging entrepreneurs as they build and grow their businesses in Puerto Rico.

Members of our Estrella LLC Labor & Employment team, Maité Medero Benítez, Eddalee Quiñones-Pedrogo, and Diego Agüeros Jiménez presented a three-hour workshop focused on “Basic Labor Issues for Startups in Puerto Rico 2026" which took place at Fundación Banco Popular and was attended by approximately 40 entrepreneurs.

Putting the right employment practices in place early can help protect the business, its employees, and its future. During the workshop, our team shared practical guidance on some of the key issues entrepreneurs and businesses of all sizes should consider.

What Companies Need to Know as They Build and Grow:

🔹Worker Classification Matters. Understand whether a worker should be classified as an employee or independent contractor. Getting it wrong can create significant liability.
🔹Compliance Starts with the First Hire. Establish proper hiring, onboarding and employment practices from the beginning.
🔹Payroll and Overtime Rules Apply. Understand your obligations related to wages, timekeeping, and overtime.
🔹Know Your Mandatory Benefits. Be aware of which benefits employers are required to provide under Puerto Rico law.
🔹Prevention is Key. Clear policies and practices can help prevent harassment and workplace bullying and provide a framework for addressing concerns.
🔹Handle Discipline and Terminations Carefully. Consistent and well-documented processes can help reduce risk when performance or employment issues arise.

💡 The Key Takeaway: Startups and early-stage companies are not exempt from Puerto Rico’s labor laws. Building sound employment practices early can help prevent costly problems as a business grows.
