Social responsibility has always been a fundamental aspect of McConnell Valdés’ corporate mission. These community service, philanthropic and civic contributions we make to non-profit organizations directly and indirectly impact thousands of Puerto Ricans islandwide. Because service is so ingrained in our firm's culture, we strive to incorporate that mission into our Summer Program.

Last Saturday, and in collaboration with Scuba Dogs Society, our Summer Associates and their mentors joined a group of volunteers to clean the coast of the Cantera Peninsula (Laguna San José). Over one ton of garbage was collected.

While our 10 Summer Associates have enjoyed a myriad of social and professional activities throughout the summer, being able to give back to our community is at the core of their development as well-rounded attorneys and the legacy of McV in today’s social environment.

Last weekend we invited a group from Centro María de los Ángeles, Inc. (CMA) and Casa de Niños Manuel Fernández Juncos to our suite at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico to enjoy Monster Jam®, one of the the most action-packed live "Monster Truck" competitions. It was a pleasure having them as guests and we look forward to seeing them again soon!

The McConnell Valdés/Antonio Escudero-Viera Scholarship Program awarded its third scholarship to Gerardo G. Cintrón Rosario, a 2nd year student at the University of Puerto Rico School of Law. He is a full-time law student who is also pursuing a master’s degree from the University of Puerto Rico’s School of Public Administration. He is also the executive director of the Business Law Journal of the University of Puerto Rico.

Just like McConnell Valdés, Gerardo is strongly committed to community service. He served as an English teacher at the Santiago Iglesias Pantín public school, contributing to the formation and betterment of Puerto Rico’s younger generations. He has also worked with the Boy Scouts and the Club Me Importas Tú of United Funds. While working with United Funds he donated over 500 hours to community service. Gerardo was also selected to participate as a summer associate in McConnell Valdés’ 2019 Summer Program.

By supporting young people like Gerardo, not only do we fulfill our social responsibility mission, we also contribute to the future of a generation committed to the social welfare of our island.

Last Friday we joined MDA's 25th BCool fundraiser. This year the event was even more fun with a visit from Señor Paleta!

As part of our community service program, our Summer Associates and their mentors participated in an activity at the Hacienda La Esperanza Nature Reserve, one of the natural areas protected by Para la Naturaleza, a unit of the Fideicomiso de Conservación de Puerto Rico (Puerto Rico Conservation Trust). They planted 300 native Puerto Rican trees, such as maga, úcar, icaco, and cajuil. These trees are now part of the reforestation program of the estuarine habitat of the Río Grande de Manatí. The reforestation will create a grove (mangle) that will help connect the river’s mouth with an adjacent mogote. They fully enjoyed their experience in contributing to Puerto Rico's reforestation and sharing McV’s commitment to the community.
