The Committee on International Law, Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA) was established in the year 2010, with the aim of; providing a forum to members of the Bar to discuss various areas/issues of international law, organizing educational/awareness activities on international law for members of the Bar, fostering a better and informed understanding of international law as an important area
of law. The Committee has organized several activities for the awareness of international law, attended and received well by the lawyers. Ahmer Bilal Soofi, Advocate Supreme Court of Pakistan and President, Research Society of International Law (the only international law think tank in Pakistan) welcomed the formation of Committee and termed it “a much needed effort”, under taken by the then representatives of the Bar and continued under the present governing body of LHCBA. The Committee has organized several activities such as seminar/talks on areas of international law such as; International Human rights Law, International Law of Treaties, Treaty Compliance, Treaty Implementation, Relevance of International Law and Municipal Law etc. Recently, in October 2011, the Chairman of the Committee on International Law was invited by an Islamabad based research institute to lecture on International Law and Problems faced by the Muslim world, organized for the students and faculty of major Madrassas in Karachi. Other panelists included M***i Muneeb ur Rehman (Senior Islamic Scholar), Mujahid Barelvi (Director Current Affairs, CNBC TV) and Prof. Dr. Saeed Shafqat (Director, Centre for Public Policy and Governance, FCCU). This was the first ever activity organized by an independent entity in which the Committee participated formally. The Committee is appointed for a term of one year by the President and Secretary (governing body) of the LHCBA – an elected and the largest representative body of lawyers across the province of Punjab. The term of the Committee concludes with the expiry of term of the governing body and fresh elections are held every year to elect the new governing body which reformulates the Committee. The Committee is headed by a Chairman and aided by Co-Chairman, Vice Chairmen and the General Secretary, and such other office bearers as may be appointed from time to time. The purpose of creating this page/group is to provide a forum for lawyers/members of the Bar to discuss and share issues of international law that in their view need to be brought in notice of fellow lawyers. The Committee may take up any such issue for general discussion in its formal meetings. Also, latest news and updates with regards to working of the Committee shall also be made available for the members of the Bar on this page.
