On this ASEAN Day, the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) joins the peoples of Southeast Asia in commemorating the 59th anniversary of the Association’s founding.

This day is not only an occasion to celebrate ASEAN’s journey toward peace, democracy, rule of law, human rights, and shared prosperity, but also a moment to take stock of how far our region has come — and how far it must still travel — in building an ASEAN Community where the human rights and dignity of every person are respected, protected, and fulfilled.

AICHR recalls that the promotion and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms is not an external standard imposed upon our region, but a purpose and a principle of ASEAN itself.

AICHR renews its call on ASEAN Member States to strengthen national implementation of international and regional human rights commitments, to invest in accessible remedies for survivors and victims of rights violations, and to ensure that the voices of civil society, women, youth, persons with disabilities, and other groups in marginalised situations are heard in shaping ASEAN’s future.

A truly resilient and rules-based ASEAN Community is one built on the human rights and dignity of all our ASEAN peoples.

Edmund Bon is the Representative of Malaysia to AICHR.

Former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob remains determined to clear his name as he prepares to face charges under the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act later this month.

Ismail Sabri, 66, is scheduled to undergo a pacemaker procedure at the National Heart Institute (IJN) this afternoon due to an irregular heartbeat.

His lawyer, Datuk Amer Hamzah Arshad, said Ismail Sabri's heart arrhythmia required immediate medical attention after he suffered a fall two weeks ago.

Earlier, Sessions Court judge Suzana Hussin fixed 27 August for Ismail Sabri to face the charge and have his plea recorded, subject to his health improving sufficiently for him to attend court.

Former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob will not be charged on Friday as he has been admitted into National Heart Institute (IJN).

Sessions Court judge Suzana Hussin allowed the defence’s application to postpone the charge and recording of plea to be postponed to 27 August, with Ismail suffering from arrhythmia or irregular heartbeat caused by abnormal electrical signals in the heart.

Datuk Amer Hamzah Arshad, leading the defence team, informed the court that his client was rushed to IJN on Thursday night while he was giving his statement to the MACC, and is scheduled for a procedure on Friday afternoon.

Former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s pacemaker implantation procedure this afternoon at the National Heart Institute (IJN) was carried out successfully, his lawyer Datuk Amer Hamzah Arshad has confirmed.

Ismail Sabri was initially expected to be charged at the Sessions Court in Kuala Lumpur today under the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act, reportedly in relation to asset declaration.

But this morning, the Sessions Court decided to allow Ismail Sabri’s request, made through his lawyers, to postpone the reading of the charge against him to 27 August due to health reasons.

In court, the prosecution cited “humanitarian grounds” when it did not object to the application to postpone the case to 27 August, as Ismail Sabri could not appear in court due to his health condition and as he is under MACC bail.

Ismail Sabri’s lawyers include Joshua Tay and Tan Xu Yin.

The ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) convened the AICHR Consultation on Human Rights Index 2026 on 29 July 2026 in Tangerang, Indonesia.

Discussions emphasised that any future ASEAN Human Rights Index should strengthen evidence-based decision-making, identify implementation gaps, promote policy coherence across ASEAN sectoral bodies, facilitate peer learning, and reinforce ASEAN’s ownership of its human rights agenda.

Discussions highlighted several essential dimensions requiring further examination, including the mechanism’s purpose and intended users; the selection of indicators and measurement methods; the availability and quality of evidence; institutional and governance arrangements; and how findings could inform policy action and the possible pathways with respect for ASEAN’s principles of consultation, consensus, non-confrontation and ownership.

The outcomes of the consultation will inform AICHR’s future deliberations on the possible development of an ASEAN Human Rights Index and contribute to strengthening ASEAN’s collective efforts to promote and protect human rights through dialogue, technical cooperation, and regionally owned solutions consistent with the ASEAN Human Rights Declaration and the ASEAN Community Vision 2045.
