Despite its un-glamorous name, maerl - a purple-pink hard seaweed that forms knobbly underwater 'carpets' on the seabed - is an unsung hero within the marine environment. 🦸‍♀️ 🌊
Often overlooked in favour of the more exotic sounding seagrass or kelp forests, maerl beds are teeming with life and store carbon, making them vital in our fight to minimize climate change.
At risk from bottom towed gears, maerl has recently been classified as an ‘irreplaceable habitat’; meaning when it’s gone, it’s gone. Cornwall has a large percentage of all maerl habitat in England, with Falmouth and nearby bays having arguably the largest beds.

This incredible photograph of two blue sharks off Penzance was captured recently by wildlife photographer Martin Yelland. 😲 🦈 📸
Blue sharks are regular summer and autumn visitors in our southwest waters, existing mainly in deeper offshore areas - although rare individuals have been known to be seen inshore, eg the blue shark swimming off the beach at Trelissick in 2022!

Like all shark species, we are a far greater threat to them than they are to us, so if you are to ever witness one of these beautiful creatures, appreciate the incredible encounter, respect their space and leave them in peace.
