Disputes can go on for a long time and it can get a bit confusing to remember what’s happened so far with your case.

This is where our case timeline comes into play. With every case, Neil creates, and can provide you, a timeline detailing what has happened so far. Not only does this keep things organised, but it can help you get a brief update about what’s happening with your legal proceedings.

If you’re interested in finding out more about how Neil can help you with your case, please call us on 01872 709172.

What happens when the legal system fails you greatly? Resilience and perseverance is needed.

The case of the Post Office is prime example of a lack of justice being served effectively within a work place.

People whose lives were destroyed deserve justice. And those responsible are contriving to make sure they don’t get it, says Guardian columnist Marina Hyde

Today marks World Humanitarian Day.

Humanity is one thing that connects us all together. By showing a bit more empathy and understanding, we can all make this connection a lot stronger.

We’ve worked with people at their lowest points and continue to do so here at Black Letter Law®. Remaining reassuring, open-minded, and most importantly, seeing the humanity behind each of these individuals has helped us cultivate a supportive environment.

We hope that with this mindset, we will always provide a safe space for our clients.

Have a lovely World Humanitarian Day.

Stay Kind.

It’s time to get familiar with another piece of legal jargon.

Today’s word is: Compromise Agreement

This is a legally binding document drafted during a termination of employment. If an agreement can be made between employee and employer without it having to go to tribunal, a compromise agreement can be written up.

In this agreement, terms of the settlement will all be laid out in exchange of giving up any legal claim against the employer.

It’s illegal to interrupt a wedding in Australia

Speak now or forever hold your peace…

Well in Australia, it’s probably best not to speak. The Summary Offence Act 1953 states that anyone who intentionally disturbs a wedding can be fined up to $10,000 or even face prison for doing so.

We should also mention that the same goes for funerals. It’s perhaps best to stay quiet for both of these life events.

Entick v Carrington (1765)

In November of 1762 Nathan Carrington and some of his men entered the house of John Entick without permission.

The defendant was ordered by then Secretary of State to search through Mr Entick’s belongings since the claimant was suspected of writing libellous leaflets against the government.

The claimant sued the men for trespassing into his home. Mr Carrington’s defence was that he was lawfully entitled to the search as he was acting on behalf of the government.

The main issue behind this case was whether an individual had the rights to protect their land over an official’s right to enter.

The court sided with Mr Entick and ruled that the defendant’s had no legal right to enter the claimant’s grounds with no legal backing i.e. a warrant.

This case cemented the ideal that no man is above the law when the court ruled that:
“[O]ur law holds the property of every man so sacred, that no man can set his foot upon his neighbour’s close without his leave; if he does he is a trespasser, though he does no damage at all; if he will tread upon his neighbour’s ground he must justify it by law.”
