The weather certainly didn’t make it easy, but that didn’t stop Sam taking the win! 🥇

And what a weekend for Sam — just a day earlier, he was crowned Scottish Hill Climb Champ! 🏆⛰️

MAJOR TRAUMA AWARENESS WEEK | DOUGLAS’ STORY 🚴

Douglas Robertson was an accomplished cyclist, riding around 7,000 miles a year. Racing, club runs, charity rides and commuting by bike were all part of his life.

Then, on a routine journey to work, everything changed.

Douglas was struck from behind by a car as he turned into his workplace. He was thrown from his bike and suffered a devastating burst fracture to his spine.

His injuries required major treatment and extensive rehabilitation. Despite throwing himself into his recovery, the consequences proved life-changing. Douglas was unable to return to the job he had held for more than 30 years and could no longer enjoy cycling in the way he once had.

His story is an important reminder during Day One Trauma Support's Major Trauma Awareness Week that the impact of a serious collision extends far beyond the moment of impact.

Recovery can take years. It can involve surgeons, rehabilitation specialists, case managers, family members and legal support, all working together to help someone rebuild their life.

Douglas is cycling again, albeit over much shorter distances, and his determination throughout his recovery is remarkable.

This week, we're sharing his story to help raise awareness of the very real, long-term consequences of major trauma.

For Philippe, the impact of his cycling collision wasn’t only physical. His story highlights the psychological trauma that can follow a serious accident — and why mental recovery deserves the same attention as physical rehabilitation.

🚊 Edinburgh’s tram network could be expanding – but what does that mean for cyclists? 🚴

Today, councillors are considering the next stage of plans for a major expansion of Edinburgh’s tram network.

Whatever the decision, we believe one issue needs to remain firmly on the agenda: cyclist safety.

Where tram tracks and bicycles share road space, there are particular risks. A bicycle wheel can slip on a wet rail, become caught in the track groove or be forced to follow the direction of the rail.

Cyclists are often advised to cross tracks at as close to 90 degrees as possible – but anyone who cycles through Edinburgh knows that traffic, parked vehicles and road layouts can make that difficult or sometimes impossible.

At Cycle Law Scotland, we have represented cyclists who have suffered serious injuries in accidents involving Edinburgh’s tram tracks.

As Edinburgh considers the future of its tram network, safe integration with cycling infrastructure must be part of the planning from the outset.

🚴 What would you expect to find beneath a flooded cycle path?

When experienced cyclist Steven rode through standing water on the shared-use path at Hogganfield Loch in Glasgow, he had no way of seeing the significant pothole hidden beneath the surface.

His front wheel struck the defect, throwing him from his bike and leaving him with a serious wrist fracture that required surgery and a lengthy period of rehabilitation.

Our investigation uncovered important evidence:

🔎 A Freedom of Information request appeared to show no records of the path being inspected for safety or defects.

🔎 Witness evidence indicated the area regularly flooded and the surface had been damaged for at least a year.

Glasgow City Council accepted liability and we secured compensation for Steven without the need for court proceedings.

Standing water can hide serious hazards. When cyclists are injured because public infrastructure has not been properly maintained, it is important to investigate why the accident happened.

At Tour O The Borders 2026, we challenged cyclists visiting our Cycle Law Scotland gazebo to put their Highway Code knowledge to the test.

Three questions. Three everyday cycling scenarios. And a £250 cash prize up for grabs.
